Maybe Famu can try this song since they like coping the Jukebox:

My Line Brother "Oops" who was SU's Drum Major back when we were there is in the Soul Rebels. He is one of the last of the originals I believe that still is in the group. Some former Ocean of Soul/KKPSI Members who were from New Orleans were in this band as well.

So I guess we own that song too. LOL

Its Oops, Wiston (tbone....crabbed in 92) and my cb Red on trumpet that are repping from SU now....they been with the band for a while now....Winston go in the band around 92 and Red got in 97...its a few other New Orleans legends that should have came up in there as well....

Southern plays da L out of that ^^^^

I just laugh when some Hunned members don't understand that. Alot of times they equate that with "it doesn't sound good". Esp, if someone from SU would cringe at their arrangement. No one ever said FAMn's version doesn't sound good. But, it SOOO out of place.

Of course, FAMn band memebers love it. That should be a given. But, point blank, their version has no real 2nd Line feel to it.

That's like trying to squeeze more soul out of this....

...and, wondering why more folks like this version better...

Doesn't make the former bad. But, it's just nowhere close to the latter.
:topic:
Actually, the former was MUCH better. I thought so then as an 11-year old and I think the same now at 48.

Being a company of one makes not a good arguement on this one. Esp, going "against" the Isley Brothers.

Man I read that with disbelief.....Not only is the song just sung better by Ronald Isley but his brother gives one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard at the end of the song......

But I guess different strokes for different folks.

If you're gonna put FAMn in it, then you might as well include these guys also

To like FAMUs execution of this song only mean one of a few things...

You don't know nothing about brass band musicc

You ain't got soul

You just like anything that ain't SU....

Take your pick.....

LOL. I have lived there all my life. So, let's analyze.

Chris Jasper's improvisational guitar playing was among the best of the era and is evidenced at the end of this clip. However, he frequently chose the wrong distortion voicing for his rhythm and bridge playing, evidenced in the rest of this clip. They picked a kyoto to give their version a an oriental effect, popular at the time because of the "Kung Fu" influence at the time. Still, they could have gotten away with that combination until ... they came back with folk guitar for the rhythm behind the verse (Gibson J-45, I think), which goes completely counter to the kyoto effect. Finally, Ronald's vocals didn't work. They should've let Ernie sing lead on this one.

Seals & Crofts picked a style and stayed with it. That is what made their version work better. The Isley Brothers were a great group. This just was not a great song for them to do in the way they liked to do things...

...which brings me back to Do Whatcha Wanna: SU vs. FAMU. The difference is that SU is a marching band trying to do the song like a New Orleans brass band without gearing back LIKE a New Orleans brass band while FAMU is just trying to play a marching band arrangement of the tune. What SU chose to try to do is EXTREMELY difficult and they did not pull it off IN THE CLIP SUBMITTED.

I give kudos to the Jukes for attempting the nearly impossible. No, Jared. I am not hating on SU.

Thanks...I needed that laugh. NO ONE in that pep band had an ounce of rhythm.

You are wrong yet again dacon.
Since you admitted you not "hating" like the other jsu person that agreed with you usually do...I would just chalk up that you don't know much about new orleans brass band...

I did give you that option...so you pointing out you not "hating" may be a hit dog hollaring...lol

Anyway...there is no exact science to new orleans brass band music...you get any brass band down here to replay anyone of their "non traditional" tunes I can gaurantee you it will not be executed the same....they may come kinda close...but the truth is they ain't even trying to do it the same....its all based off of emotion.....

The only way you don't pull it off is if you are trying to calculate each note such as FAMU is doing...

So in short ...the goal is not to try to sound like rebirth brass band...but to play it with the new orleans brass band flavor.....I guess you going to tell me next that SU with a band full of new orleans brass band members not doing a good job of executing the first type of music they been introduced to right?..(I hope not)
End of class.... I'm charging next time...

Maybe Famu should try the Soul Rebel song, "Let Your Mind Be Free". Folks in Florida would never fully understand the New Orleans Brass band sound, because it's not part of their cultural, which reminds me of LSU (Cajuns and Rednecks) playing the Louisiana Creole zydeco song, "Cupid Shuffle". Southern have had the luxury of having a vast number of individuals that grew up in New Orleans and the creole parts of Louisiana, which makes it almost natural for them to play that type of music. These individuals have been singing and dancing to that music every since they could walk and talk. Anybody familiar with New Orleans would know that street corner brass bands are a common thing there.

Some o them are just hard headed brah....smh

Most of the foolishness on here is all in the name of "hate" for the great SU of course...

SUtrp96,

You say that I am wrong, but what you elaborated on supports me.

The nature of the brass band playing jazz is that note placement is going to be very inexact. That is the beauty of it. When you have a group a dozen or less musicians with no more that two on any given part, being inexact is very colorful. When you have a group of 128 with 5-6 people playing the same part, inexact is no longer colorful.

This is why I gave the Jukes kudos for trying to do what is nearly impossible. I get the genre very well, but it has its practical numerical limits. In fact, I have scratched my head trying to thing of 5 tunes where the winds (6-5-5) a standard big band plays more than 4 consecutive bars in unison. It is just a very difficult thing to pull off.

Again, the SU arrangement is written to capture the essense of the NO brass band. If it was played one-on-a-part it would be fabulous - screaming trumpets kissing off notes and all. With 128+, it just ain't gonna happen. If FAMU tried playing that SU's arrangement, they would not sound as good as SU simply because of the larger numbers.

While Im thinking about it....

Yall are laughing at Baylor. But, Baylor sounds closer to actual 2nd line'n than FAMn does. The only thing that's not favorable to FAMn's is the dancing (which is funny).

Er...um...uh...what is this 2nd line'n to which you refer? When is any performance secondary to another?

Again....its several "new orleans brass band members" in SU band..hell I was one...
