HOUSTON - Former NBA guard Nick Van Exel, who was an All-Star in 1998, is returning to the game of basketball, but this time as a coach.

Van Exel is in the process of being hired as an assistant coach at Texas Southern University in Houston.

"I said I was going to retire in '06, take two years off and try to get into coaching," said Van Exel in an interview Thursday with FOX 26 Sports. "It didn't work out as planned.

"So here I am my fourth year retired, couldn't sit around in the winter this time. Coach Harvey brought me on the staff. It's going to be something exciting."

Van Exel played 14 years in the NBA. He spent his first five years with the Los Angeles Lakers and also played for Denver, Dallas, Golden State, Portland and San Antonio.

He played college basketball at Cincinnati and it's the college game where Van Exel's coaching career will begin.

"College guys listen and that's the most important thing," Van Exel said. "I have something on them that they want to strive for and when I talk I will get there attention."

Not a big surprise, saw it coming a mile away! and to add good luck Nick with that attention!:goodbad:

Texas Southern may get back to their 1992-1995 glory years. That's a good hire for their program that will attract a lot of major recruits. Good job !

We just continue to bring in celebrity coaching into the SWAC. The rest of y'all should do the same.

Did Nick ever finish his degree? You know 99% of them Huggins boys that played for him at Cincy did not.

Seriously, he can't do anything but help. So I aint mad at ya TxSU.

I don't see it as bad. He can just use the school as a training ground or become head coach eventually. He might be able to get you into some of those schools that ignore HBCUs.

All those years in the league-you going to link up with folks. If his son is playing basketball, he might be able to get steal some recruits.

So what, everyone who has played the game can't coach or teach the game. Hold up on the great hire stuff. THis guy hasn't proven anything until TSU goes undefeated in SWAC play and win in an NCAA tournament game.

True but we konw how folks are attracted by a name. Maybe his name might attract someone who would bypass Texas Southern for Texas College or UTEP. He might not be a big name but if a kid thinks by coming to TSU to play for him is a sneakier path to the NBA or NDBL. So be it.

Because if TSU wins a NIT or NCAA tourney game with him or looks DECENT in a loss. Somebody will come a calling (SMU).

All this could be true if Jacka$$ wasn't at the helm.

Unless he's gonna play this isn't that big of a deal! Pro players sometimes don't make good coaches like Clyde Drexler! Congrats and best wishes!!!

Have to disagree. You have some proplayers doing it in coaching. From what many have noticed it's the ones who were role players or busts that are doing well (no offense Larry Bird).

College
Tony Bennett (always in running for jobs)
Jeff Capel
Brook Thompson
Steve Alford
Shawn Respert (might not be active since leaving Rice)
Miles Simon (assistant only)
Rex Walters (see Bennett)
Bruthaman at South Carolina State
Sidney Lowe (for now)

Drexler failed because he thought his name alone was going to attract kids and they would put up an effort because of it. Much like Jordan with the Wizards and Bobcats. And Magic Johnson.

Wrong-a guy that fought to stay in the NBA-ala Avery Johnson-is a better choice or someone that was in the spotlight that mellowed out in the end.

Nick might not mean more wins but if he helps this team be respectable in defeat to where a Baylor knows when they face TSU and win by 20-they know would have had to FIGHT for all 20 of those points.
