Are you going to retire at your current job?

Loyalty & Respect
I ask this question because in a conversation with my parents, they asked me why I leave jobs so soon. I explained to them that the places I worked so far were simply jobs (Car Dealership, Radio Station, Campaign, PR firms). I was using them to pay bills and build up experiences for my career. She asked me if the next job I take will be long term. I told her probably not, I am going to work there for a few years and when I finish grad school (2011), I will probably go work on someone’s administration or staff eventually. I am just going to stay in the public sector.

My branch off question is are you settled in your career and can you see yourself retiring from your current job.

Probably not. I am contractor at NASA here in Houston. My currently is slated to end 2015. It's pretty rare these days that one remains on a job long enough to retire. There is not loyalty between companies and employees so employees are not loyal to the company.
 
POP in these times there is and should be no company loyalty. They will kick you to the curve in a heart beat and you should always be ready for the next opportunity. That I spent 30 years with a company has past us.
 
The way things change so much here I could be in the same group but having worked for 3 different companies by the time I retire, if I don't leave on my own.
 
Probably not! Loyalty from the Employer and Employee is not there anymore.

yeah, company loyalty in non-existent these days. You can be gone in a heartbeat. I can't see myself at one gig for 20 plus years unless I just love it.
 
Well I hope to be here until I retire or at lease that is the plan. A lot of opportunities have come my way to make more money, but this is stable, Monday thru Friday 8-4:30, and holidays off. I can be here until I am old and senile because I see too many around me who are like that. Also, my son is starting Southern next year so I need to be in on place for now.

I love what I do; however, as previously stated Nothing these days are permanent.. Thats Just how it goes.

Also in the near future, Ill be working on a Doctoral Degree... So I had better Not be at and doing the same job:argue2:

Got plans to open my own spot in the downtown area the year before I retire to get into the groove.

Wireless hookup, News, Sports, Drinks, BIG SAMMICHES, and the usual bar type food.
Maybe breakfast and few "sig" dishes for the happy hour and night crowd.
Nothing too big..............3000 to 4500 sq feet for the entire setup.

Been working on the idea every since the downtown area was designated the "Entertainment District".
Big tax breaks for anyone moving in and setting up shop..:nod:

After I finish my PHD I'm going to go back and teach on the University level. I want to help more minority women enter the field.
 



At KLLM, it doesn't seem to look that way, since they're not putting anymore APU's on the trucks until more and more areas start enforcing anti-idling laws.

Hopefully, I can get an opportunity of my own to maybe start my own company from the ground up and take it one step...and one truck....at a time.

Definitely not. I do not wish to stay in city government. Love the career; not crazy about the current job.

My dream job is be a PR director at an HBCU, eventually teach (part-time) creative writing to high school students and write more books.

I feel ya. I am looking at Jackson or Gulfport whenever I decide to run for office. It depends on how this next census turns out...

I just interviewed for a contract specialist and a program analyst position at two branches of the Defense Department. Both of them are training programs so after two years, I will have the option of staying in the feds or leaving. I will prob see a few more job jumps before I am settled. After grad, I need to start looking at finding somewhere to put my retirement funds.
 
I don't think some people in our prior generation realize that the work environment is very different than it was when they were in their 20's or 30's.

At my old company, some of the older adjusters used to fuss because some of the younger ones would come in, do a year or two, and then either go to another company or into another career altogether. I had to explain to some of them that a lot of young folks are not going to stay at a place for 20-30 years if they know that there is something "better" out there in their eyes. Our generation is aware that we have options and we do not have to stay at a company or even in a career if we are not satisfied with it.

Our generation is also savvy enough to know our worth salarywise. I am a prime example of this since I left my old company after two years when another company had an opening paying nearly $10K more than what I was making. Aside from that, after seeing my mother get laid off from their companies in a row back in the 90's after never being laid off or fired in her previous 20+ years in the workforce, I know that nothing is guaranteed. We are not in an era where you can stay somewhere for 30 years and then get a watch and a pension. Hell, with the way things are going there is a chance that your company may not even be around by the time you retire.
 
Nothing is guaranteed in this world and if a person is single moving from job to job is not a problem. My parents would tell my sister who is single “when you eat everybody eat.â€￾ However, stability is not just a concept of the Depression. When you have a family or you want a family it is not a good ideal to be moving around a lot. Trust me I know. You can’t have breaks in medical insurance coverage with children. It’s not a good idea for kids changing schools a lot. Also without a good pension or a good 401K you don’t want to have your kids to have to take care of you when you get old. Stability is not guaranteed but you can looks for the best chance to get it.

Ditto!!! I also wouldn't mind going back to Grambling and retiring. It is a huge goal of GUD to be able to work on campus again. I wouldn't mind being the Financial Aid Director. I loveddddd that job. But I couldn't put up with the politics and bullshi*... Attitude and willingness to just speak my mind would probably have me fired. I love working with kids and young adults in these two age groups.
