Dr. Liddell Resigned??????

Brave "4" Life
I don't know how true this is but I was told by a friend of mines today that is a sonic boom alum that Dr. Liddell resigned today. If this is true, what happen?!

JSU's fiscal year begins July 1; maybe Dr. Liddell got Dr. Jimmie James position? If this is true, Liddell is going to select his replacement. :shame:

If there is to be a new BD, I hope the deal was done a month ago and kept on the DL. It's late in the game to be searching for a replacement.

That should be a plus for JSU.. Maybe they can be less like SU and get them dayum lines straight again...

I was sad to hear this last night, I didn't want to be the one to put it out there first. I got the call last night. Yesterday I was told was Docs' last day. I just got off the phone minutes ago with the person he has recommended, but I will not say who out of respect to Doc., that's Docs' place to do. But we will be alright, we need to get behind this man and support him. No back stabbing or back biting. We have changed band directors before and made it through. I was in Haughton and Taylor's band. Each has left his on legacy and Doc will do the same.

He is not going to be the new Chair! He's going to enjoy his family. I have two sons in the Boom with a third on the way next year. Doc and I would talk every year about will this be his last ride. I would tell him stay until my last son get through but..!!! Good luck Doc and job well done!!!

Luv Da Boom!!! See you at Band Camp.

This is strange. Doc should lead the band at least one more year. Do we have a department chair yet? You can't really expect to hire a director of bands without having a dept chair first. Also, no one on staff has a doctorate as far as I know so it is unlikely that any of them will be named Director of Bands.

From what I was told Dr. Bishop is the new chair, or at least the "acting" chair, since Dr. James retired.....but this could either be a REAL good thing or a REAL bad thing...I don't think there will be a "happy medium" with this situation...i hope they pick the right person for the job...

LOVE DA BOOM!!! :D

Whomever the new band director, the torch of success will continue to shine forth and The BOOM will continue to bring the "funk" like no other band in the world. I'm confident of that!

I know a lot of old school boomers are happy! Hopefully they will hire someone who just doesn't care about the sound! Hopefully they care about the precision of the drilling also! That's where JSU lacks!

Liddell, Sonic Boom leader, retires after 17 years at Jackson State

(JACKSON, Miss.) - Jackson State University's Director of Bands Lewis Liddell has retired from Jackson State after 17 years. As director, Liddell led the famed Sonic Boom of the South marching band and supervised the administration of the entire band program, which includes the symphonic band, concert band, woodwind ensemble, brass ensemble, percussion ensemble, pep band and Prancing J-Settes dance line.
The decision, he said, comes after more than three years of consideration.

"I was playing a young man's game," said Liddell, 64. "I had to make some decisions for my family and myself. I need to move on and let other folks enjoy it and give the program a chance to grow."

Liddell plans to vacation with his wife of 41 years, Frances Liddell, who retired from the Jackson State Department of Public Policy and Administration in 2008.

Liddell's departure comes at the same time as that of music department chair Jimmie James, the voice of the Sonic Boom. James leaves the university after 43 years. He calls Liddell's departure a "big loss."

"While it is going to put pressure on the band staff," James said, "I think with a lot of hard work the Sonic Boom will rise to the occasion and work very diligently to have a banner season."

As for the future of the Jackson State bands and ensembles, Liddell is confident all will continue to do well.

"One thing Jackson State's band has been blessed with is continuity and people who know what they are doing."

Dollye M.E. Robinson, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, said she is working with university administrators to identify an in interim band director

 why not a full time director?! this may not turn out as well as people may think...

With all the flack people give the BOOM about their marching and drills, the fact is they drill better than MOST bands out there. TNState is probably the best and we all know SU can march but most other bands primarily stand in place make a straight line and stand in place again. But some of you all seem impressed by that.

JSU is better than most bands when concerning the sound of the band being more consistant... But Drilling, JSU ranks with the worse... Alcorn is a better drilling band than JSU.

The interim band director will be the full time director. Same thing happened when Dowell Taylor resigned. Edward Duplessis became the interim band director in 1991. Liddell was selected band director in 1992.
