Letter to GSU Tuba/Sousaphone Section Members

I understand that the band is smaller now due to the whole admissions thing. I think it's great the they are not just excepting anyone who applies. Maybe that is why the school is on a serious move for the better. I love Grambling's band, but the " World Fame " Tuba section has been horrible for the past 7 years! Please! Get back to making some noise in the SWAC like the 70's, 80's, 90's and early 2000's. Grambling's Tubas used to always bring power and a full sound that used to make Robinson Statdium, Cotton Bowl Stadium, Memorial Stadium and the Superdome sound like a Iron Storm was getting ready to hit! What happened 220's? You guys have been sounding like pure low budget/ Great Value Brand Thrash Bags these days. Now, Grambling has always had sections in the past who are always inconstant, (French Horn, and Trumpets), who have ups and downs, but they don't ever go this many years in a row without making some kind of noise in the SWAC! Even though Grambling State has many haters, the Tuba section always held their own during battle if not just plain killing their opponents. And yes, that is a fact. I have been to many games throughout the years and have heard people say even in a defeat, " they got Grambling, but those Tubas were killing "! Now, people talk about how the Tubas are just plain-old thrash these days. Even some die hard World Famed alum who are Kappa Kappa Psi, 220 and even a few Phi Mu Alphas have complained for the past few years at every major game I have been to and totally agree! What the section has been putting out lately is just embarrassing! Come on section, get it together! That low/bottom sound that you guys have been " trying " to get the SWAC band-world use to really SUCKS and is just not working at all! It just sounds like someone is passing some serious gas. I am one season away from making a GSU Tuba Worst Hits Tape on Youtube from footage that I have from previous game and some alumni if you guys suck in 2009. Pass this letter on! Maybe this letter will put some fire in your horns for this season. Thanks for understanding!

Love,
Dr. Acon Cerned Fan!

He's telling the truth...

French Horns and trumpets are the most inconsistent section in the band as well...

The band is getting better! Problems have plagued the tuba and trumpet sections! To many chiefs and not enough indians! The tubas didn't start having problems until 2005 so i don't know what you are talking about with that 7 year crap! Since Mr Hendrix came on board in 07 the overall band has improved and will continue to improve! Glad you're concerned, i will pass this information on!

Very insightful thread! The sousaphone section hit rock bottom in 2002 and has been "hit or miss" ever since. They have improved since then but they were better before 1998. Just keep strivin' and hit those practice rooms. Y'all will be ok.

The only problem I have with this big cry for help, is the fact that GSU is just fine with hitting and missing... Some of you may think it's on a year to year basis but it's actually on a song by song basis with some of them sections... Besides the woodwinds in GSU band I can't honestly think of one section that is known for being consistant..

GSU isn't fine with just hit and miss! From the outside looking in you may think that! Some things were and are beyond the control of the students! Things are only going to get better because someone is finally on staff that has the drive to get things right! The band has went through it's bumpy roads and it's not looking back and oh the woodwinds and baritones are the most consistent!

I see and hear the improvements! Just keep on improving and that will hush up these peeps! When everything is clicking on all cylinders you will still have haters, b!tchazzness is in most black people!

When everything is clicking on all cylinders you will have haters but yet more supporters..

True to an extent, FAMU's band has many peeps are hating on them, though they have supporters but people are jealous and hate on organizations that are successful! That's the way it is!

Most importantly through the hate and support group you will have something from all musicians that know and understand our culture, "respect"..

That's all that should really matter..

Please! You heard it right, 7 years. Getting better? Ok dude. I am going to focus on my topic instead of posting something else about your whole " Grambling is getting better " comment. Anyway, Hendrix, who I have performed with many of times, is a great director and good for Grambling State, but he is only one man with limited say so at the moment. In fact, he agrees with me 100% about the Tuba section. He himself says that he hates the bottom note/fart sounding mess. I know he will make improvements as time goes bye, but he is only one man.

This "letter" should not have been posted in a forum such as this. If you are truly a former member of GSU's band then there are obviously other channels through which you should voice your opinion.

Who is this 'newbie' poster anyway?????

A poster who has been a long time fan and viewer of the SWAC page/TSPN. Post like yours kill me! I guess I need to make 100 friends or 100 post before making strong post huh? I can't wait to see your responses to my next letter coming soon to a Jackson State Band Director.
33.3 FAMU(Sound)+33.3 GSU(Dancing)+33.3 SU(Volume)

Equals=??????? ????? U.

LOL!!!!!!!! Jackson State U! All man, this cat is funny! Oh yeah, as far as Gram's tubas goes, I agree that them boyz need to start blowing again because they have been garbage lately. I would love my T-Bones to bring that power they had in 01,02,03,05 back again also. I am glad Mr. Lacy isn't calling their shots anymore.

I disagree with you on one man can't do nothing! Michael Hendrix was put in charge of cleaning up the sound of the band, he's over all music! The limited time he has been back at Grambling you can already hear the difference so that one man crap can't do nothing is a lie! By the way were you in Gramblings band?

Ok Cerned Fan! You should have sent this to someone's email, you are doing things the wrong way! You really can't do much anyway! You're a cerned fan! If you are so cenred email Gramblings directors or call them personally!

There is no " if " in this. I am a concerned fan. In fact, I know what methods I could have use or how I could have gone about this issue! I " choose " to go about it this way for a few very great reasons other than creating a buzz.

And yes, I am a former member of the band, but I was a realist then, and will always be. When something is hot, I say it's hot. When it's cold, I say it's cold.

1. No matter what you say, Mr. Hendrix is only one man!
2. I agree, you can hear a difference.
3. Yes, I am a former band-member/former athlete.

No matter what you say that one man has made noticeable improvements so my previous statement still stands! Stop criticizing and give back, go help out at band camps or rehearsals, sitting back talking doesn't do anything!

I'm also an alumni of the band (GSU) and I agree also that the tuba section haven't been the same in awhile. I mean them boys use to have the superdome ringing back in the day and when I first got into the band. But now all they went to do is play mello mood all the time. Also them low fart notes have to go because its not the truth. I love my band but those lows and fart notes have to go because its not everything. Please don't blame this on the directors because they don't have nothing to do with them playing all of those low notes.
