SWAC Baseball records

I'm looking forward to my annual swac baseball tournament, but I really hope that JSU, Southern or Alcorn wins. Those #4 seeds, who weren't allowed into the tournament in the past, have horrible records. They won't stand a chance in the regionals. SU is the only baseball team that will be competitive in a regional play. Even my beloved JSU might compete.

Records
SU is 24-14
JSU is 35-19
Alcorn is 23-17

a&m is 14-25
Gram is 13-31 (goosh) who wants this kind of record going into regionals
Tex So is 22-27

The swac should have keep the three team format from each division. #4's are too risky.

Alcorn has a losing D-1 record. They have that record by beating alot of D-2's and NAIA's. But with that being said Alcorn can hit. UAPB has a very impressive win OC, and next to SU I think they would be competitive in a regional, because they have the best pitcher in the conference. MVSU seems to have some pitching, but looking @ their stats, their bats are missing. Gram and TSU can hit with the best of them, but their pitching is SUspect. JSU seems to have good pitching and good hitting but has fail to get that standout OC victory. Dont know anything about AAMU. Its going to be a very interesting SWAC tournament  .

Lets take a look at the RPI's as of 05/11/09.
SU(25-14 D-1 record) comes in at a season high of 175. SU RPI was 100 earlier in the season. Next is Valley @ 245(17-23 D-1 record), and UAPB 246(16-22 D-1 record). JSU comes in @ 249(24-19 D-1 record). Gram's RPI is 274(13-30 RPI). Alcorn is 274 (11-16 D-1 Record). AAMU 288(10-21 D-1 Record). TSU 294(15-27 D-1 Record).

I agree.
8 teams is way to many teams playing in a baseball tournament. With that many teams you bring down the level of play. With less teams, you get the best against the best. We are rewarding mediocrity.

Is SU 25-14 or 24-14? You both posted different records. SWAC has them 24-14 (through May 11), but D1Baseball.com has 25-14.

With all the economic craziness - has the SWAC discussed changing their formats of any and all tournaments to fewer teams?

Im going to list each teams non SWAC D-1 victories.

AAMU-none
Alcorn-none
UAPB-Wichita State
Grambling-Centenary
Jackson State-Famu(5 wins),UT Pan Am(2 wins)
MVSU-Stephen F. Austin,Northwestern State
Southern- #23 San Diego State, UNO,Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana
TSU-FAMU(3 wins ),UT Pan Am

Too risky to kick ya'lls arse again......

Just win then and you won't have that problem ......

Don't be trying to change the rules since ya'll skurred......

Nobody scared. Just stating the obvious. More games is actually a advantage for SU, because SU has more pitching than everyone. I like the idea of each teams best facing each other, not some down the line pitcher deciding a teams fate. Try making the tournament next season :retard: . We owe yall one from last season :upset: , and the year before :upset: :upset: .

I honestly could go with either format. But, I fundamentally believe the decision should be determine based on a strategic plan for the conference that utilizes an economic analysis of the tournament for the framework of the decision.

As someone who played in the SWAC Tournament expanding the event really hurts teams more than it helps. It's not like basketball where it is a single-elimination deal. You lose on the first or second day of the tourney, you might as well cash in your chips, man.

Pitching depth is key to winning any tournament. SWAC baseball programs historically lack in that department, especially in the bullpen.

A team has to win five games to be crowned conference champs. You lose on Day One, you now have to win possibly eight games to be champions. Not to mention there is a possiblity a team would have to win two games during the championship round just to make the regionals.

By that point the pitching is thinner than the Olsen twins. Not good going into regional play against a Top 5 team who has pitchers on the roster than will get drafted in the first and second round.

The expanded tournament might be a draw in the future, a long warm weather outside affair for black folks besides, SWAC pitching should be tested prior to trying to compete in any real college baseball postseason competition. The end all goal should be to able to compete in the college world series.

You same pessimistic black folks that said a black president would never be elected will probably say that a black college team would never make it to the college world series, but an optimist would say IF a black college team makes it to the world series, their pitching will have to endure a CWS load of innings, which requires a serious test of arms.

I will go on record and say SU 03 should have made it to the CWS. That team had more players drafted than any team in the country and the college baseball player of the year. That team lost one of its pitchers, Joshua Kirk(freshman all american the year before) to injury. SU had one of the best college pitchers, Dewan Day, who pitched SU to a first day victory in the regional. SU had a lead in the 5th inning in the winners bracket, but lost the game. I have a feeling if Kirk was around, SU might have won that game. I will also say SU 09 has a chance to do some damage in a regional if they make it out of the tournament.

That 2003 SU team was the best squad I have ever played against. They really had a legit shot at making the CWS. But every school in the SWAC is not like that, however. It is not that we are pessimistic about SWAC programs making it to Nebraska as the TheShizza says, but we are realistic.

Honestly, in order for a SWAC school to make it that far there will have to be eight or nine pitchers who will be very high MLB draft picks, especially the closer. Those cats are not going to HBCUs. Southern just is able to get guys over the years who have talent.

But sad to say great black prep pitchers are damn hard to find.

Why? The good one's don't play baseball past high school for starters or they are moved to another position in college.

I think right now there is maybe one or two black starting pitchers in MLB and few scattered guys in the bullpen.

I understand that the above may be the case, but the economics dictates that conference administrators operate the tournament not just under the constraints of athletic competition. But, consider the economics of operation cost, as well. Such that there is an optimal baseball tournament size that would be supported by fan demands based on average player quality, competitive balance and regional specific factors. I am only suggesting that the optimal size of the baseball tournament should be based on baseball revenues and expenditures.

Whats negative about saying that you are crying about having to possibly play a 4th place team. Crying about "we don't have the arms to play all those games". :whine::whine::whine:

If you come to win, you come to win........no matter who you have to play.

I've coach select baseball for years and when we play these weekend tournaments, our teams may play anywhere from 5-9 games in 3 days (mostly 2 days) and none of my kids or parents ever said a word about having to play that many. I have 12 kids (6 pitchers) and ya'll have 25 plus on the team with at least 10 pitchers and you can't manage that many arms for pitching in these type of situations. That's just plain sad.......

I wish I knew how old the kids were that you coached so it could be a more fair comparison. But from my experience the level and quality of pitching on each team drops significantly after the first two or three starters.

Grambling has been a solid offensive team over the years, but the suck at pitching. So does the Bama schools and Texas Southern and most other programs with the exception of Southern and Jackson State.

You have some guys in the bullpen who should not even be pitching at all, and you have some guys in the rotation who don't deserve to be starters either.

The SWAC average ERA is 6.83. Not good. Grambling's team ERA is 9.00. Alcorn's is 6.35. JSU is 4.07 and SU is 4.77. Not too bad, but better than MVSU's 5.32 ERA. The the Top 10 teams in the nation combine for an ERA just a little over 3.00.

That is why expanding the tournament is kind of a slippery slope, considering the next round will be played against teams that have lights out pitching and hitting.

So all the Swac schools only have 2-3 pitchers on the team and everyone else
is just busters out there for nothing.

I blame the coaches for that if thats the case. Everyone can't be a starter and have to be specialist to come out o the pen. Even the guys I have know their roles and some are starters and others come in as relievers to shut certain guys down.
