Today's Music and the SWAC Band Experience

GSU #1 in MS

Freshman
WATTS!!!! Every band today is concerned about watts!!! Put yo wait on em!!! Wang on em!!!! We crankin!!! We Smashin!!!!!!.......................All of this is said, but where is the musicianship? Speaking on the SWAC.....how many people praise the hell out of......SU........in the past, sound quality was WAY better this year.....however......when they went up against JSU....."JSU smashed them boys." "They had them watts!!" Has volume taken over our society, and thus killed alot of bands? Look at how we as a people often listen to music. Not for clarity......we just turn it all the way up.............to where the speakers are rattling, and the MELODY is DROWNED OUT BY THE BACKGROUND.......and u really can't UNDERSTAND THE SONG!!! Now........go to an SWAC game.......Alabama State vs. SU..........personally, if I had a band that sounds like a trainwreck going up against me, and I'm SU........working out quality sound...........I would leave in the fifth too. What have we done to our music. I can look back at old school Band battles. It wasn't about watts.........it was about music. When will we get that back?

What do you think of GSU's clarity? Real question.

What do you think of GSU's clarity? Real question.

you asked someone about clarity? lol

I know GSU is balanced and that is a fact! If you can only hear what a group of band directors were saying at the BOTB's and most were from the south louisiana area!

What did they say? Who were they? What Bands do they direct? Please do tell!!!

Because the melody is the most important aspect! Hell playing whole notes and half notes as loud as possible, that's what peeps do when they first pick up a damn horn!

What's the point in hearing the melody if it's not played well?

U didn't just say that? That explains PV sound in Dallas!!! Those are songs that should never leave that band room till they are together.......please tell me u aren't a music major.

Go focus SU's band in this rough hour bruh because you talk constant nonsense! Some of yall negroes on here act worse then high school kids i tell ya, most of yall have b!tchittis: act like females always want to argue, but i'm already finished with this topic because i see where it's going! Argue with yourselves lol!Lunchtime for me!

EXCUSE ME!!! Before yall get to smackin bout comments on GSU and SU.........this is about ALL SWAC SCHOOLS. None of us are really off the list.........SU, GSU, PB are close to gettin clarity and sound quality. Nothing wrong with a diaphragmatic sound, but some things.......

should just be left alone.

Damn..........sorry....I know I said no smack, and I won't, but they say we sound like a high school?

ASSumptions get you done dirty. You are correct. I am not a music major. I am a degreed, certified music TEACHER, and trumpet player (you know, the instrument that commonly carries the melody). BTW, I have not had anything to do with PV or its sound since 2004-2005 (which, coincidentally, is one of the years people mention as one of the best PV bands they have seen). So what do my comments have to do with sound?

You bit on my comments. I made that comment to say that when you balance a band around a trumpet section (or any section for that matter) that has no confidence in their ability, it does not sound good at all.

I'll stop here, cuz you TRULY have no idea how unmusical I can make your young arse look.

Hmm, must have been nothing. Why mention the other south Louisiana band directors that were there if you can't repeat what they said, or who they are, or what bands they are affiliated with?

Who's a high schooler?!!

I agree, but honestly I would rather hear that and sing the melody to myself rather than listen to a trumpet section hope that they play it right.

2shay, and I won't dare question musicality with your years advantage. At the same time, I know sum guys that have degrees and have programs that sound like death on a loadspeaker. Oh yea, 04 PV!!!:tup: But........I'm saying.........if the melody is the meat, and most important part.......and it's not sounding....presentable..........y put it out there?? Aside from that, I'm still stuck on this blowing business!!

See,............that's just what I mean. Practicing to near perfection...........as a trumpeteer........what u think of these hangin over trumpets, and everybody wanting to "scream". Go to that clip I just put up and listen to it. U will see exactly what I mean!!

You do know this was recorded without video. This was a dance mix on the field. You cannot really use this. but you will see who sounds like a highschool when we face each other for the SCG battle of the bands.

I agree with you, and that's usually the issue I have with GSU. As the trumpet section goes, so goes Gram. And recently, mediocre trumpet sections have been the norm. Everything around them can sound very nice, and they come in timid and thin and ruin it for me.

IMO, screaming is less of an art than it was back in the day. It used to add something to the song. Now, it's just ego-trippin' (as a former director of mine used to say). Hanging over, in moderation, does not bother me. This is not limited to trumpet sections. TxSU is notorius for its tubas hanging over to end songs. In some cases, I like it. In others, I don't. Depends on the character of the song.

I won't dare deny that either. Not throwing stones, but your alma mater did the same thing this year.

So, you will say that sounds good? And the BOTBs will take care of itself. Hanging over repulses us. Makes you look stupid. Then hanging the wrong note. ON FIELD RECORDING WITHOUT THE VIDEO MEANS NOTHING>........BAD IS BAD!!!

I wouldn't doubt it. I haven't been to the Cotton Bowl for the last 2 seasons. I saw them at the LDC and against SU. I wouldn't say that they were weak. They played well and with confidence. IMO, they just didn't overcome the mellophones to be heard as consistently.

Generally speaking, part of that blame can be placed on arrangers. Older songs don't really count in that debate to me. But if a new arrangement gives the melody to the weakest section on the band in hopes that they can shine, they are doomed for troubled. That isn't just PV....That's ANY band.

Hanging over is wrong ALL OF THE TIME. There is not moderation of something wrong. I will never like it.

I agree with that. Still, some people think as individuals......not bands. Selfishness, like hanging over, screaming tha wrong not, going outside of the box.......
