48trpts...

Brave

Da Better U get, Da Better we get & That's IT
and Jackson has a grand total of 5 screamers.

I stood right below them and I can't believe it.

I must admit the formula works very well for you all but as a trumpet player I just don't have alot of respect for yall. I thought these dudes be doing some major blowing.

For the most part them 5 dudes just laying out waiting on one note to scream.:shame:

As an old school Super First Trumpet player in the Juke.........I see this more and more these days. Not just with JSU. But with a lot of bands. I call it the ESPN highlight syndrome. Everybody just waiting to kill one note, then snatch the trumpet out there mouth and look like they did something. LOL. Just sad. Lets me know these new school trumpet players have no stamina. Not practicing long tones to build up them diaphragms and be able to blow with constant power without having to lay out.

I will say that I was impressed with JSU trumpets when SU played them in October. They were bringing some heat that game. I do think the Boom has allowed itself over the last 5-10 years to get too top heavy with trumpets. As much I like my instrument and hearing them. Sometimes you can have too many. But if they aint blowing nothing, it makes no sense to have them. I never marched in a band with more than 36 or 38 trumpets at SU and we were way more powerful than what I am hearing now. Same thing at JSU. They had hella trumpets in the 80s. One or two cats sounded like 3 or 4 (Jesse Hall, Kenny Duplessis and Kenny Archer would sound like 9 first trumpets by themselves). All this laying out messes with the phrasing of the song properly. It makes it sound choppy and unbalanced. Because all you are doing is coming in and out when you feel like you have rested up to hit the big notes or waiting for a powerful part.

You see many times on TV when bands are on the field how cats aint playing through the show. Just waiting for a particular part so they can blast it. I blame this on all these band directors for emphasizing the stands so much. We just got through talking about that in another thread. It is all about the stands now. Instant ESPN highlight syndrome. Hit a high note or blast something to get seen or heard. Too much individualism in the bands now.

Ddue, you over here too talking about losing respect for anything named Jackson?:smh: Just face it, yall got totally dominated on the field and in the stands? Quit crying over spilled milk and face the fact that the BOOM waxed, and waxed thoroughly, that school named Alcorn in every possible way.

Dude, I'm just stating what I saw at the game. This is what jsu was doing.

I stated that it works well for you all but I just remember when I played we had to blow throughout the whole song. Maybe it is because of the numbers that jsu has that they have that luxury to lay out but I just ain't never seen that before.

I have never stood below you all, I usually always stay on Alcorn's side to listen to jsu and Alcorn. This year I decided to see what it would be like standing under jsu and that is what I saw...5 dudes on the back row in the middle of the section...if you don't think I'm telling the truth just go look for yourself.

I just couldn't believe it. Back when I marched we took up entire phrases. Yea we had some one note screams but we still had to blow throughout the rest of the song.

It does work well for you all though.

You have said it well. I get the impression that the level of productivity out of their instruments and the music they play has fallen short of previous years due to the philosophy of today's directors (middle school thru college) and the laid back flavor of today's youth.

We were taught and trained how to produce the right type of quality in the marching band, in the concert band and in the stage/jazz band. The quality never changed, but the sound obviously did.

The long tones; running thru all of the scales double octave; progressive etudes and pedal tones. Quality sound. Endurance. Range (top and bottom).

Instead of teaching folks how to develop quality long lasting range, it appears most directors discourage range assuming they can't get it consistently all day and all night. It's a shame because arrangements sound so much better with multi-level octaves being played. I can remember how I use to love to here the Chase of Roy Johnson's arrangements - every section holding its own; in most cases each part of every section holding its own... To hear all of those parts with the multiple octaves... Whew!!! And to have it all clean and crisp with the instruments playing vocal parts in such a manner as to make the horn sound like it was signing, the ones on guitar parts sounding as though they were stroking or plucking; the ones playing keyboard parts sounding like they are tingling ivories... etc.... Talking about the sound of a symphony and a mass choir coming out of a band.... YES!!! But, all that is reduce to a nice arrangement without that boring extra effort and encouragement of positive and productive growth and expansion.

It is the example of operating safely and getting safe results verses operating in productive cutting edge efforts and getting cutting edge results.

Peace...

I respect all posts and Opinions made...

But I have a question for BRAVE: What do you think about Alcorn's Band.... or Alcorn's TRUMPET section? (Exactly what did you NOTICE about them?)
and Be honest!

(I'm expecting a Detailed Answer... I know you can do it)

:)

*I'll be back for your answer.

(O yea, it was a pleasure having you stand in front of the Boom Today. Glad you left full with Opinions. I believe I saw you. Are you the Alcornite [Mid-Age, with Alcorn Jacket/Pull Over on with Cap] who was talking to the all the Jukebox Members?
After the 5th, Things got a lil "HOSTILE" down there with the Jukes LOL. All I heard was "Smack smack smack smack.... smack smack....Yea, We'll see y'all in B'ham... Hopefully" Going off of their trash talk, I assume they're eager to Battle the Boom AGAIN!)

Why was this thread even created???

Have we (bandheads) gotten so obsessed with critizing each other's bands, to the point where that's all we do? 2dapoint mentioned things got a lil hostile in the 5th, with the Jukebox members who were there talking smack. I wasn't there (then) so I really don't care one way or the other. But it's sad that all we ever do is stand-around and critique everybody's band.

And to listen to some of these youngins, they don't know shat about bands but wanna stand and argue with you allday long. And then wanna get upset and wanna jump froggy...... All over a dayum marching band...

I love the Boom, but I ain't finna fight nary a n***a over it.... Fux dat.

:shame:

Man I was sitting right in front of the Boom next to some lady with Hot pink top , tight jeans and hot pink boots. From me and my little brothers point they sounded great. Alcorn was forgettable seriously......

When I walked away the Seniors were running down to the field to dance...

I enjoyed myself this game. Didn't get to the tailgate. My crew wanted to get back to the house and BBQ and watch the Texas Tech vs OU game.

^^^ commenting off Taylor and Shaw (You guys are Right. Its really not that serious. As the boom exited the stands after the 5th qtr, the Jukebox band members harrassed them :shame: Started talking all types of Noise. It was sad but it didn't get too crazy b/c the Boom looked at the silly b/c all you heard was "HOPEFULLY we make it... and hopefully this" so the boom laughed and walked down to the field.)

I personally think that some old school band head got his feelings/pride hurt at the classic and decided to sign in and create a stupid thread.
I'm not even going to bash or post negative critiques on Alcorn's band... I'm just gonna sit back and wait for BRAVE to school me on his band B/C I don't want to be "BIASED"

I'm still waiting for him to post his thoughts and opinions on Alcorn's band/trumpet section :)

and Frosty, 48? :noidea:

Hell if JSU has 48 trpts that's a smart move on the band directors behalf! It's hard to find great trumpet players these days it was easier back in the 80's and 90's. Band directors have to be smart how to balance their band! JSU has a wall of tbones so 48 tpts is a great thing because when them mf's open up with 48 tpts more than likely you will still here the melody and that's the most important part! Many bands need to recruit more trumpets, especially if they have over 25+ trombones, 18+ b-tones and even 15+ mellophones! You know once those sections open up on chords and whole notes, trumpets will get drowned easily so increasing the trumpet numbers to balance everything out was smart on the directors behalf! Some of you hate for no reason!

The truth is that every SWAC band that I have seen videotape of in the last 10 years has some number of players as described by BRAVE. Yes, I said EVERY - meaning without exception. I am not dumb enough to place the blame on the college directors for what I see; I know that they know better. I do blame them for what I hear because they they allow it to continue.

It is a bad habit that carries over from the early years of young players developing...and nobody stopped it.

About 20 years ago in the SWAC there became a pre-occupation with screaming. Prior to that taking parts up was a HIGHLIGHT to ENHANCE the over TIMBRE of a phrase or phrasing while retaining the SONORITY of the sound. It has since just become the noise over the top of everything.

It saddens me.

Well I am not going to get into the politics about who was better and all that. I must say that I was very disappointed in the Boom drum section playing while Alcorn's band was still on the field. That was blatantly disrespectful. :( Now you can take however you please, but it is what it is.

Carry on.....

While I agree with you, I don't think it was intentional, I truly believe they thought they were finished.

...dayum this thread got mute....

NT....I am still waiting on that question to be answered because I know if he sat right in front of JSU or below JSU, surely he was able to here that one across from the Boom. I never understood how people could critique someone else's band with a needle but when its time to start at home, they act as though there band is D.C.I. (Drum Corps International) material. I am going to wait for Brave on this one. I still would like to know his opinion of Alcorn and how disappointed or impressed he was with them.

Come on folks... Nothing wrong with some constructive criticism. Just because someone points out an area where improvement can be made, doesn't mean they are bashing who the comment is directed, especially when among peers, because we all can understand the angle from which it is directed.

To say 48 trumpets should have sounded more impressive (I'm guessing that is directed to volume) is a point that can be made if it doesn't sound like what the listener believes. Many have stated that about FAMU for years, but they sound really nice. But, their dynamics aren't that dramatic.

It's style, whether it is the style we prefer or not. It isn't and should not be about attack. It is and should be about constructive criticism or genuine friendly feedback.

True some folks come on here to straight rip another band/school. That is crap. But, everyone doesn’t come on that point. Brush our soldiers off and everybody act like grown musicians and not rival gang members.

Peace...

Brave, i'm curious... what do you think about Alcorn's trumpet section...

BAD is what I think about Alcorn's 08 trpt section.

Their section is not much smaller than when I marched. The most we ever had was 24 in 1998. It was a very strong section that year. The least was 18 in 1999. We got covered up alot that year 99 but we still had a decent to strong sound for our numbers.

Alcorn trpts of 08 actually have some very talented players (about 3-4 at most) but the rest of the section is not carrying its weight at all. In fact whenever those 3-4 players are tired or not playing you hear it all too well. They have 17trpts....they have alot to learn. I think they just don't know how to get the most out of every player. Yes...even the most slaw has to pull their weight...they most certainly aren't right now.

P.S. I will never be caught fighting at a football/band performance. That is just silly...I was nothing more than a spectator.

This not a stupid thread..... it's what dude feels.... Every band sucks these days. Ya'll know damn well that no band in the swac is what it was 10 years ago. Txsu and pv seem better only because they are much larger....well i will give uapb there due for being better but that's it.
