Alcorn looks to relocate 2010 Classic

Kareem Copeland • [email protected] • November 22, 2008

For the 16th consecutive year, the Capital City Classic was played at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

But No. 18 won't be played there - if Alcorn State University athletic director Darren Hamilton has his way.

Hamilton favors playing Alcorn's game against Jackson State University every other year in the Braves' home stadium in Lorman, not at JSU's home stadium, starting in 2010.

Jackson State is against the idea.

Hamilton wants the game in Braves' territory for three reasons: to gain a home-field advantage, bring more people to the campus and to eliminate promoters.

Alcorn, Jackson State and Elite Entertainment are in the first year of a two-year contract to play the game in Jackson. The universities split the revenue from tickets, concessions and parking and are scheduled to receive $60,000 each from the promoter.

Hamilton said Alcorn has not received its payment. Jackson State athletic director Bob Braddy would not say if JSU has been paid.

Hamilton said he was rushed into signing the current deal soon after being hired in April.

"I didn't have enough time to vet these particular promoters, which I am very uncomfortable with," Hamilton said.

Dallas-based Elite Entertainment president Darryl Blair said he can understand Hamilton's concerns.

"Of course, everyone involved would like to see the game stay here," Blair said. "He's entitled to feel that way.

"Hamilton's an astute businessman. But it's great for the city of Jackson and puts them in a positive light."

Blair said part of the challenges this year has been changing the culture surrounding the game and making it more of an event with a golf tournament, fashion gala and comedy show featuring Rickey Smiley.

He said Alcorn not having an athletic director caused a late start. Several sponsors from years past backed out for a variety of reasons. Elite Entertainment also has promoted the Labor Day Classic between Grambling State and Prairie View A&M and the Martin Luther King Jr. parade in Dallas.

"I think that we can better build our relationships with other corporations in the city who benefit from this economy," Blair said. "I think they're taking a wait-and-see attitude to see how it turns out."

Hamilton has made it known he wants to play as many football games as allowed by the NCAA - 12 - and keep as many home games as possible in Lorman. The Braves went into the season with 11 games on the slate, but Hamilton was able to arrange a 12th game against New Mexico State on Oct. 4.

"The Classic certainly gives Jackson State the home-field advantage hands down," Hamilton said. "We need to increase our enrollment, and, as you know, we're in the business of educating young men and women. We need to get people on that campus that would ordinarily not go down (to Lorman).

"With a 22,500-seat stadium, we need to invest in ourselves like Mississippi State and Ole Miss did when they used to play down here. If we need to increase that stadium to 30,000 seats, that's what we need to do."

Braddy said moving the game would be a mistake.

"They won't make as much because fans won't travel because of the inconvenience of the traffic," Braddy said. "The average fan won't want to leave home at 4 a.m. and stand in line three to four hours.

"If they can average 20,000 paid fans, it'd be beneficial. I don't know if they can do that."

The 2007 Capital City Classic game between JSU and Alcorn drew 32,506 fans.

Fans heading to Alcorn's Jack Spinks Stadium have complained about traffic jams because U.S. 61 is the only major route into Lorman. And then there's only one way onto the campus.

"Looking from an Alcorn perspective, I can't really blame them," said Avis Heath, a JSU fan who went to the game at Alcorn in 1993. "The core fans are going to go. But it's such an inconvenience for anyone who's not already there. It's so hard to get down there and get situated and get in. Most people are going to say it's not even worth it, and they're right for the most part."

In the past, the schools have had a Capital City Classic board in place to run the game, but that agreement ended last year. The new contract included only a promoter. Braddy, who has been critical of promoters in the past, agreed to the current setup, in part, because the promoter will not receive a share of ticket revenue.

PREACH P!!!

2 MLK Parades! Ghetto!

I don't blame Alcorn's AD... Did I read it correct, the payout if $60k each? Wow!
The schools get that on top of all the other revenues. Usually, the schools get a guarantee and that's it. For some reason, the "promoter" pays that $60K to each school, then they split ticket sales, parking, concessions. I've always said this really ain't no classic, in the "classic" sense. They just stuck a name on the game.

Robber,

Help ol MB out? If the schools get $60k each and they also split ticket sales, parking, concessions, etc, what the hell does the promoter make? I mean, where does he get the money to pay the $60k if it's not coming from ticket sales, concessions, etc? Is there some major sponsor that I don't know about who pays the bills?

Something isn't adding up...maybe I'm overlooking something!

I understand why Alcorn would want the game at Lorman! Some Alcorn fans feel like they are at a Jackson home game when they come. But if u have never been down to Lorman there its one way in one way out, deer crossings, all the time no where to stay or nothing, traffic would be horrible and like they said earlier when the game is in Jackson there are events all around the game, places to stay, eat and shop! It would be like moving the BC to Grambling or SU! U cant see it happening and I am so serious moving the game to Alcorn would be a bad move it is so damm kuntry down there its horrible!

I am of the opinion that TP, NT and GetReady didn't know about this situation. It cost 60K to turn the lights on in Mississippi Memorial Veterans Stadium. Notice I did not say JSU Stadium.

I'm so glad Alcorn only signed a two year contract that expires next year. I really don't give a damn about playing in Jackson or what JSU fans, coach, and AD think about coming to Lorman. If they don't like it then don't come.

I feel ya Styles... I would take the same approach as the Alcorn AD. Bring your azz to Lorman. No way would I play that game every year in the same stadium that JSU plays all of it's home games.

If traffic is bad enuff, contact your legislator to get the highways widened.

lol you can't compare the Capital City Classic to the Bayou Classic!

I would not mind if the game was played at Alcorn one time every other year. It is good to have that home and home feel. That is like Illinois and Northwestern playing all the games at the Urbana campus. It would never work.

To the point about there won't be anything to do or places to go prior to or after the game...Tough. There aint nothing to do in Evanston or Champaign, but the fans don't complain about it. They going to a football game. If the JSU fans don't wanna go to Alcorn, then fine. Heck, you can always go back to Jackson and shop or go clubbing after the game.

This is a real slippery slope. I understand where the people at Alcorn is coming from but here is the one major thing that will come into play if the game is move to home and home.

What is now a game that generates annual revenue for both teams, will become a game that will generate revenue every other year for both teams if it is moved to a home and home situation. That can make a huge difference in each program's operating budget.

The Valley game was played in Jackson every year, it's now played home and home. If the Alcorn game is moved to Lorman in 2010, in 2011 JSU can schedule Alcorn for Homecoming in October. If there will be no Capital City Classic in 2010, I say move the Alcorn game up the schedule.

I would not do that.

If that is done JSU could potentially lose money. Homecoming for JSU is going to be a money game regardless of the opponent. The very fact that Alcorn is playing JSU will attract enough people on its own. There is no need to trick it up.

The year the game would be played @ Alcorn, it wouldn't be called the Capital City Classic( not in the capital city). If that is the case would the classic have to be renamed...

I agree with Alcorn's AD. I think it's a stupid move when Valley or Alcorn agrees to play in Jackson every year for a "classic".... No mtter how you slice it... it's a home game for JSU. LOL. It's not our fault, though, that the idots have done it for so long. I've been saying the CCC needs to be restructured or scratched. It is no real benefit for either school...

On the flip side.... No matter WHERE Alcorn plays Jackson State... It WILL BE our home game. That's just the facts. You can't run from the mafia, our fans, our trash talk, and the "hostile environment"... We will just bring it to your campus like we've done for Valley.

*hand claps* for Alcorn finally getting an AD that realizes that they've been being pimped. LOL.

How about the Magnolia Football Classic. There you have it. Took me five minutes. Next.

Exactly, but the game was home-away for years anyway, the CCC is still a relatively young thing. I say change the name back to what it was called for years "THE SOUL BOWL".

There are other events in and around Jackson that generate revenue for the city. Jackson cannot lose this revenue so they will chip in and add money to the pot. This game use to be packed bell ruined it. So it's trying to come back but we need the corn to get to winning again. Unlike the MCC in a true nuetral site and folks come for the event and not the game. The CCC has always been about the game so if one team sucks the crowds will reflect that.

They make more money than $60,000 or JSU wouldn't have signed the contract to begin with. Come on guys the Clarion has no idea what we make and it's been good to both school.

Take it back to Lorman. In off years Alcorn will have to add a money beat down from a FBS school. JSU will be fine.
