"This is just pure fun. There's no negative," Driscoll said. "Obviously, if somebody didn't get a ticket, they're going to be upset. We can't avoid that. But we just want to continue this as, hopefully, a great experience for everybody."
Fiscally, postseason involvement has also been rewarding for W&M, though the Tribe won't make millions, as many I-A bowl qualifiers do.
W&M and all other schools that play hosts to I-AA playoffs submit a financial guarantee to the NCAA for each postseason game. That guarantee is covered by ticket revenue. Of the funds brought in beyond the guarantee, the NCAA gets 85 percent and the school gets 15 percent.
Driscoll estimates W&M's 15 percent from a first-round game against visiting Hampton two weeks ago as a net revenue of $11,000. "Maybe a little more last week [vs. Delaware] because we had a [larger] crowd, and we should make a little more this week. But also the [NCAA] guarantee goes up each week," he said.
According to Driscoll, W&M submitted a first-round guarantee to the NCAA of $30,000, a quarterfinal guarantee of $40,000 and a semifinal guarantee of $50,000.
Driscoll estimates William and Mary's combined net income for three weeks of serving as a playoffs host at $30,000, which, as he notes "is equal to one out-of-state grant-in-aid."
