Tribe success fuels feelings, finances
National semifinal is 'pure fun,' W&M's athletic director says

"This is just pure fun. There's no negative," Driscoll said. "Obviously, if somebody didn't get a ticket, they're going to be upset. We can't avoid that. But we just want to continue this as, hopefully, a great experience for everybody."

Fiscally, postseason involvement has also been rewarding for W&M, though the Tribe won't make millions, as many I-A bowl qualifiers do.

W&M and all other schools that play hosts to I-AA playoffs submit a financial guarantee to the NCAA for each postseason game. That guarantee is covered by ticket revenue. Of the funds brought in beyond the guarantee, the NCAA gets 85 percent and the school gets 15 percent.

Driscoll estimates W&M's 15 percent from a first-round game against visiting Hampton two weeks ago as a net revenue of $11,000. "Maybe a little more last week [vs. Delaware] because we had a [larger] crowd, and we should make a little more this week. But also the [NCAA] guarantee goes up each week," he said.

According to Driscoll, W&M submitted a first-round guarantee to the NCAA of $30,000, a quarterfinal guarantee of $40,000 and a semifinal guarantee of $50,000.

Driscoll estimates William and Mary's combined net income for three weeks of serving as a playoffs host at $30,000, which, as he notes "is equal to one out-of-state grant-in-aid."

Only Goldy did more pimpin'. Wow!

For comparison sake, how much do the SCG teams make after expenses are taken out?

Because of the payout structure, I would be surprised if it was more than $30,000.

It don't matter cuz everybody get a cut wether you play or sit at home.

Trying to figure out who said the playoffs were profitable? :noidea: I think everyone admits it is not. That's one GOOD reason for the SCG. The only REAL valid reason. But here is another side to the debate....

ASHEVILLE — Strictly from a bottom-line measuring stick, making the playoffs is a financial loss for the Appalachian State football team.

Increased expenses and the fact that the NCAA gets most of the gate from home games has left the Mountaineers in the red for about $50,000 a year for each of the past two national championship seasons.

That’s a small price to pay, because in the big-picture world of finances, having the best FCS program in the country has produced millions in revenue for the university.

The Mountaineers, who host Richmond at 8 tonight (ESPN2) in the FCS semifinal round, are 37-6 over the past three seasons, including a 10-0 mark in the playoffs.

That success — and a shocking 34-32 win at No. 5 Michigan in this year’s season opener — have produced the following financial increases in ASU athletics:

I'd like to know the exact figures myself instead of getting bullshat answer's like "it's all good".:smh:
Give me some GOOD figures on the revenue this game bring in and the cut from the 2 participant's down to the percentage each SWAC school get's.

It don't seem strange to none of you that these figures are never released by the SWAC or the sponsers?
None of you find this "strange"?

I think that there are some people who know... i even think Mighty Dog knows...lol But the thing that calms my spirit is that we chose this game over the Heritage Bowl which had major sponsors and a NBC contract. Also, our Presidents are about the bottom line and I don't care if each school only gets 5K from the SCG, that is better than one school losing 50K and the others making zero.

The NCAA may have a restriction on 12 regular season games for FCS schools...if so, the SWAC needs to appeal that ruling on the grounds that we do not participate in the FCS playoffs (the supposed reason that former 1AA schools voted against the 12 game season).

Anyway...we need to have 12 regular season games for each school. I think it helps our conference as a whole for each individual school to have the revenue that an extra game could bring. I mentioned that because having a 12th game make mean the NCAA won't allow us to have the Championship game... No problem for me. The split for the teams (all 10 of us) from the SCG (if there is a split) can't be as much as an extra payday for each school.

The playoffs are made for the rich can get richer. The SWAC is smarter than what folks think. If they let them know how much money we make off of the SCG they will come asking for it. Don't be crazy. Beating them at their own game is what we are doing.

Yeah right.:retard:

On the floor........:lmao:

Cee, if those schools could draw 40K to a Championship game, they would pul out of the playoffs. We are the ONLY 1-AA conference that can do it. The MEAC need not even try it. This is where I say that we are not proud of ourselves. If the SoCon was doing this, we would be asking "Why can't we do it"? If it ain't white, it ain't right!

For real bruh. We make money off of this game. No joke, I have a partner that works with the SWAC office in Bham and he said that it is more than what folks think. Now he did say it wasn't BCS type money, but it was more than what folks think. Now it is funny that no one will tell you the exact amount. I tried to get it out of him, but he said "On the real we make money". So I left it at that.

That is so true. I mean for real, who really attends a Ga Su versus Mc Neese St game.

So you're saying the NCAA, (which by the way, has jurisdiction over the SWAC) has no authority to gain access to our financial records?!:noidea:

Yeah, be a normal ninja and tell it, so the NCAA will cut in and require us to donate part of it to a playoff we don't participate in. Just like their reqirement for us to have 8 teams available for the playoffs but allow the Southland to participate with 6 and and actually they never had more than 6 until this year. Only in the SWAC.:D

Yeah run and tell it, hurry up.
