Your Favorite Air McNair Memory or clips

Re: Your Favorite Air McNair Memory

My favorite memory of Steve was one play against Jackson State. I believe it was his senior year. Jackson State sent a blitz, he backpeddled, made several guys miss, scrambled back almost 20 yards and ran for the first down. All I could do was shake my head along with the rest of the packed house at Memorial Stadium.

Re: Your Favorite Air McNair Memory

Nobody is mentioning the '91 year. Alcorn's defense was just as dominate as the emerging McNair. All I remember hearing in mumford that year was McNair to Torrance Small for the touchdown.....over and over again.

Re: Your Favorite Air McNair Memory

Jerry Wilson .... damn Jerry Wilson. That's all I could think of as a 15 year old watching on ESPN2. Wilson lets Hinton get behind him and Kenya Rounds couldn't pull McNair down and Steve lets this heave go that just floats into Hinton's hands where Wilson pulls him down on the 1. Dude even had a intentional grounding call on the play before and still was able to make that damn play happen. Steve, of course, sneaks in the game-winner. I cried the whole damn day, seriously.

It was even funnier because either the year before, SU lit them Braves up 47-31 and I just knew it was gonna be hell the next time we saw McNair.

Truly a SWAC Legend and one I feel privileged to have watched in person twice and on TV several times. That's probably one of the reasons why I cringe when I hear our own tearing down the conference that brought Rice, McNair, Slater, Williams, and Blount to the NFL. :(

Preach Jag.

Re: Your Favorite Air McNair Memory

A King's ransom to the man who can produce video of McNair against Troy State during his senior(?) season. He pulled off a huge comeback that day, just like he did virtually every week. The only footage of that game that I ever saw was what aired on WLBT Sports Journal the next night. On a single play, McNair had to have juked and/or broken the tackles of about 8 defenders (no joke) in route to a big gain on the ground. Never seen anything like that since.

McNair has the distinction of being the one QB who got more dangerous under pressure. Ironically, the worst thing you could do was have a solid pass rush when facing him.

I have no doubts that he was the greatest player in the history of college football. Anybody who saw him live can hardly refute it.

'94 Alcorn vs. Southern....I think this game was on ESPN 2. This game was so exciting I think you could make a movie about this game.

He made a play like dat inside the 10 yeard line in the horseshoe! Everybody on JSU side was like damm can we stop him once I remember the old men next to my mom and dad cursing up a storm...That was the first I remember seeing white families at a Jackson State Game...There hasnt been a game at Memorial that packed since it was certainly more than 60,000. I also remember ASU band cranking up Xscape "Who Can I Run too"....That game alone made me want to go to a HBCU....Steve McNair and Alcorn wore JSU ass out that night! Man I can remember jus seeing all them folks at Memorial u had to be there at least three hours early jus to get your seat! What a Game!:D

Re: Your Favorite Air McNair Memory

That '94 game should be re-aired on ESPN classic in my opinion

Re: Your Favorite Air McNair Memory

I had an upper level International Business course with Strahan (and a few other football players) my freshman or sophomore year.

One Monday following a game, Strahan and Corey (can't remember his last name but he played on the defensive line) sat in class talking about how they tried to knock McNair into "1999 with Prince" but he just kept getting up!
*sorry, had to be there to get it*

They were pissed and our professor (Dr. Zanubia) did not bother them once while they were in class on a Monday after a game.

Re: Your Favorite Air McNair Memory

Then there was his last Capital City Classic. Standing room only. Steve is killing JSU. In the second quarter, he scrambled and went towards the sidelines. Right before he takes a little shot from the JSU defender, he grabs his hamstring. He was a little slow to get up and ended up going to the locker room early. He was late coming out the locker room after halftime, too. I think fans of both schools were hoping he wasn't seriously hurt. A little into the third quarter he finally comes out, escorted by security guards. I think the entire stadium cheered when he came out. They would have stood up but it was already standing room only.
That is my memory. I was sitting in the aisles on the vistor's side. The only seat I could find and i didnt want to go to the rest room for fear I would lose that seat.

Oh, and sorry Antroy, I did want McNair to be hurt that game. Hell, we lost to him 3 years straight before. And I wasnt one of the ones that was cheering when he came back out late in the 3rd quarter either. I knew we had lost once again. :(

Black you are 100% correct. Nobody from JSU was happy. JSU was the visitor that year. I was sitting with my then girlfriend and she wanted nachos..LOL I told that braud I would take her to Red Lobster but I was not moving that day. Man she was hot. We got there about two hours early and didn't eat until late.....LOL

Of course McNair was doing his thing but that game was a straight up offensive show down. There was NO defense that day....well in the first half at least. We went in at the half either tied with Alcorn 28-28 or we had a small lead. Alcorn surprised us by running Bullock. Asberry and William Arnold were putting on a show.... Asberry even did the Heisman pose in the endzone. That first half was PURE excitement. I recall McNair dissin Paul Credit on the sideline when Credit was tryin to explain that fumble. He was talkin to McNair and McNair was iggin him. He was like, "you heard me". McNair looked at him and pretty much turned his head back to the game. I watched that game so many times it may not still work... lol I even recall when Big Daddy was gonna kick that refs azz. They had to hold him back...but that ref changed the call... :emlaugh:

Re: McNair days at ASU

Speaking of clips, here is the SHSU v Alcorn State game (from the coaching film, not the ABC video)...SHSU wins infront of the largest crowd in school history.

http://www.gobearkats.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=19900&ATCLID=3761449

Fresh off of his Sports Illustrated cover appearance, McNair didn’t disappoint the record crowd or the national TV audience. He completed 33-of-56 passes for 395 yards and also led the Braves with 46 yards on the ground. “Air” McNair tossed two touchdown passes and ran for one more.

But the Bearkats countered with an offensive attack of their own, gaining 511 yards of total offense, including 310 on the ground. Lester Leonard led the way with 119 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns and Wayne Coleman had 111 yards on 18 carries and three scores.

The defense also rose to the occasion, picking off three McNair passes and recovering two other fumbles. The victory was part of a five-game winning streak to start the 1994 season for the Bearkats.

Re: Your Favorite Air McNair Memory

Steve played in many great games but to me his last game in Memorial was something else. There wasn't a seat in the house. JSU was giving him trouble in the first half and by boy #9 Quincy Coleman gave Steve a hard hit and injured him. You just knew he was finished. He came back out an lit us up all on a bad wheel. Hated it then but I was in the house that night and that was one of the best games ever in Memorial.

That is probably my fondest memory also. After the game he was riding around in a limo and some friends of some friends invited him to stop by our apt for a party. He was really cool and down to earth...RIP Steve

Re: McNair days at ASU

I remember watching that game. What I'll never forget was the fact that SHSU had a defensive back with one arm who showed out that day. I think the kid had a pick or two.

Yeah he did pick one off. I always thought he played for Grambling, though.

Re: Your Favorite Air McNair Memory

The playoff game against Youngstown State, how he outshined the other 21 players on the field even in a losing effort I think he had close to 600 yards in offense in that game.

I along with 3 other friends traveled to Youngstown for this game. Steve had his hamstring injured the week before in the j-state game and couldn't run on that bum leg. He threw for over 600 yards. And we were thinking this could have been our 1st playoff victory because he had plenty opportunities to run but he couldn't. Thanks for the memories Steve!! R.I.P.:smash:

In law school, one of my best friends was an Alcornite. He always talked about the one-armed DB from SHSU. He would say that dude was committing pass interference with his disabled arm all game. Refs just didn't wanna call it on me. And he use his elbow to illustrate what he thought the dude was doing. Hilarious!!!
