Truly a SWAC Legend and one I feel privileged to have watched in person twice and on TV several times. That's probably one of the reasons why I cringe when I hear our own tearing down the conference that brought Rice, McNair, Slater, Williams, and Blount to the NFL.
My favorite memory of Steve was one play against Jackson State. I believe it was his senior year. Jackson State sent a blitz, he backpeddled, made several guys miss, scrambled back almost 20 yards and ran for the first down. All I could do was shake my head along with the rest of the packed house at Memorial Stadium.
'94 Alcorn vs. Southern....I think this game was on ESPN 2. This game was so exciting I think you could make a movie about this game.
That is my memory. I was sitting in the aisles on the vistor's side. The only seat I could find and i didnt want to go to the rest room for fear I would lose that seat. Then there was his last Capital City Classic. Standing room only. Steve is killing JSU. In the second quarter, he scrambled and went towards the sidelines. Right before he takes a little shot from the JSU defender, he grabs his hamstring. He was a little slow to get up and ended up going to the locker room early. He was late coming out the locker room after halftime, too. I think fans of both schools were hoping he wasn't seriously hurt. A little into the third quarter he finally comes out, escorted by security guards. I think the entire stadium cheered when he came out. They would have stood up but it was already standing room only.

Oh, and sorry Antroy, I did want McNair to be hurt that game. Hell, we lost to him 3 years straight before. And I wasnt one of the ones that was cheering when he came back out late in the 3rd quarter either. I knew we had lost once again.

That's the same one for me. Quincy Hit his arse. #9 on #9
Fresh off of his Sports Illustrated cover appearance, McNair didn’t disappoint the record crowd or the national TV audience. He completed 33-of-56 passes for 395 yards and also led the Braves with 46 yards on the ground. “Air” McNair tossed two touchdown passes and ran for one more.
But the Bearkats countered with an offensive attack of their own, gaining 511 yards of total offense, including 310 on the ground. Lester Leonard led the way with 119 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns and Wayne Coleman had 111 yards on 18 carries and three scores.
The defense also rose to the occasion, picking off three McNair passes and recovering two other fumbles. The victory was part of a five-game winning streak to start the 1994 season for the Bearkats.
Steve played in many great games but to me his last game in Memorial was something else. There wasn't a seat in the house. JSU was giving him trouble in the first half and by boy #9 Quincy Coleman gave Steve a hard hit and injured him. You just knew he was finished. He came back out an lit us up all on a bad wheel. Hated it then but I was in the house that night and that was one of the best games ever in Memorial.
This is the link to our web of some old highlights and sound I found here at work of Mac during his days at Alcorn That I put together.http://www.wjtv.com/jtv/news/local/article/remembering_mcnair/15526/
Speaking of clips, here is the SHSU v Alcorn State game (from the coaching film, not the ABC video)...SHSU wins infront of the largest crowd in school history.

I remember watching that game. What I'll never forget was the fact that SHSU had a defensive back with one arm who showed out that day. I think the kid had a pick or two.
The playoff game against Youngstown State, how he outshined the other 21 players on the field even in a losing effort I think he had close to 600 yards in offense in that game.
In law school, one of my best friends was an Alcornite. He always talked about the one-armed DB from SHSU. He would say that dude was committing pass interference with his disabled arm all game. Refs just didn't wanna call it on me. And he use his elbow to illustrate what he thought the dude was doing. Hilarious!!!I remember watching that game.
