Valley to reveal new coach today

Mississippi Valley State has scheduled a news conference for today in Itta Bena to introduce its new men's basketball coach, but Tuesday night school officials were not in a sharing mood.
Athletic director Lonza Hardy would not comment, only to say Delta Devil fans would have to wait until 11 a.m. to find out who their next coach is.
This much is known: It won't be Mississippi State assistant Robert Kirby, who said Tuesday he withdrew his name from consideration but did not know which direction the school was going.
That leaves four others, led by former Southern Miss coach James Green.
Also interviewed were Arkansas-Pine Bluff assistant George Ivory, Panola (Texas) Junior College coach Scott Monarch and former Dillard University coach Marco Bourne.
Monarch and Bourne could not be reached, and Green and Ivory did not return messages left on their cell phones.
Green coached Southern Miss to 123 wins and 109 losses in eight seasons, including a 22-9 mark and a Conference USA co-championship in 2001.
He resigned near the end of the 2003-2004 season amidst growing uncertainty about his job security. That team finished 13-15, the Golden Eagles' third straight losing season under Green.
Green, an Ingomar native who played at Ole Miss, did not coach during the 2004-05 season.
Ivory, a former standout guard at Valley and former Valley assistant, received the most support from alumni in large part due to his ties to the program. He has been an assistant at UAPB for three seasons.
The hiring comes more than four months after Valley's 57-55 season-ending loss to Jackson State in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament, and 21/2 months after Lafayette Stribling retired.
Stribling is now the men's coach at Tougaloo College in Jackson.
In 22 seasons at MVSU, Stribling won a school-record 315 games and led the Delta Devils to four SWAC regular-season championships, three SWAC Tournament championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
The new coach inherits a team that finished 13-15 overall and tied for second in the SWAC with an 11-7 league mark. The Delta Devils lose starting point guard and leading scorer Hosea Butler. However, eight of the top 10 scorers return.
In addition, the incoming recruiting class includes Kenny Dawkins, a first-team All-State point guard from Holly Springs.
