TWO SU JAG BASEBALL SIGNEES SELECTED IN 2006 MLB DRAFT

June 7, 2006

Two of Southern University's nine baseball signees, have been selected in the 2006 Major League Baseball draft.

Cedric Hunter was selected by the San Diego Padres with the 93rd pick in the third round, while Michael Thomas was selected by the Baltimore Orioles with 672nd in the 22nd round.

Hunter (6-0, 190, OF, Martin Luther King HS, Decatur, GA) batted .565 with 12 home runs, 21 rbi's and 20 stolen bases this past season. He also walked 28 times, while striking out a mere two times. He also had a staggering 1.160 slugging percentage.

Michael Thomas (6-4, 195, C, Thurgood Marshall HS, Houston, Tx.) is a first team All-District selection, as well as a South All-Star game participant, Thomas batted .415 with five home runs, 13 doubles, one triple and 26 rbi's this past season. He also had a .793 slugging percentage. Thomas is seen as a player who can come right in and control the catchers spot for SU next season. A big physical athlete who can run, throw and field his position.

So what is the likely hood of either showing up on campus? I would assume the 3rd rounder wouldn't come but what about the other one.

Southern University recruit Michael Thomas also got a call.
The Los Angeles Angels chose Thomas, a 6-3 catcher from Houston in the 22nd round.

Southern coach Roger Cador said the family told him the Angels were expected to negotiate with Thomas this weekend.

But Cador said he felt ? barring a substantial push from the Angels ? Thomas would come to school.

The Angels drafted three catchers, including first-round pick Hank Conger, on the first day of the draft and then another catcher with their second pick Wednesday after taking Thomas.

?Michael feels college is best for him at this point and intends to show up at Southern in August,? Cador said.

As a senior, Thomas hit .415 with five home runs, 13 doubles, one triple and 26 RBI, with a .793 slugging percentage.
