GRAMBLING -- Grambling State moved up one spot to 14th in this week's Sports Network Division I-AA football poll while running back Kendrick Shanklin has been honored for his special teams work in Grambling's 37-22 season-opening win over Alcorn State.
Shanklin was named Monday as the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week after playing a big role in Grambling's win over the Braves.
The 5-9, 175-pound senior transfer from the University of Kentucky returned three punts for 81 yards, including a 70-yard scoring romp in the first quarter.
Shanklin, a product of Baton Rouge's Catholic High School, also returned three kickoffs for 85 yards, averaging 28.3 yards per kick return and 27 yards per punt return.
"We knew coming into the season that Kendrick would be a big part of our special teams and he proved that in a hurry," GSU coach Doug Williams said. "With Kendrick helping us in returns and Brian Morgan kicking, our special teams have definitely improved this season."

Why did Doug take out the starting QB in the Alcorn game?

Why was a starting DB suspended for the first game? will he be back?

Possible Answers:

a) wanted to get a backup some time and thought this was the game to do it in.

b) Chris Brown was suspended because of the fight in last year's Bayou Classic with SU's Michael Hayes.

BTW, good going K. Shanklin! Another BR boy doing the deed!
