Austin A. Lane — a vice chancellor at Lone Star College with experience driving up enrollment in that community college system and elsewhere — will be Texas Southern University's next president.

Lane, who currently helps run a college system with seven campuses, served as president of Lone Star's Montgomery campus for six years, from 2009 to 2015. Full-time enrollment at the school grew by 20 percent during that time to just more than 12,000 students.

Texas Southern paying new president $398,000 in first year of three-year contract.

Texas Southern University's new president will make just less than $400,000 a year, considerably less than his peers at several other state colleges.

Austin Lane, who most recently was second-in-command at the Lone Star College System in Montgomery County, will make $398,000 his first year, plus benefits. Lane will get an $8,000 raise each year of his three-year contract, TSU Board Chair Derrick Mitchell said.
