A three-year-old workplace retaliation lawsuit against the Southern University Board of Supervisors and two officials opened Monday in Baton Rouge federal court.

Joseph Cedric Shelton, former alumni affairs administrator at Southern, was fired in September 2009. Shelton alleges his career ended because he testified in favor of former Southern University System President Ralph Slaughter in Slaughter’s workplace retaliation suit against Southern.

Slaughter, whose civil suits against the system and some officials remain pending, publicly reported female employees’ allegations that former Southern Board Chairman Johnny Anderson had sexually harassed them.

Slaughter’s system contract was not renewed in the summer of 2009.

Southern officials will testify “the reason Mr. Shelton was fired was because of budget cuts,â€￾ jurors were told Monday by Carol Powell Lexing, Shelton’s attorney.
