W.Va. State narrows presidential candidate field

by The Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
-- The hunt for the next president of West Virginia State University has been narrowed down to three finalists, said board of governors Chairman Larry Rowe.

Following a meeting of the presidential search committee Wednesday afternoon, the university released the names of the three candidates for the universities top spot: Brian O'Harold Hemphill, the vice president for student affairs and enrollment management of Northern Illinois University; Alicia L. Jackson, dean of the School of Business at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania; and Donna H. Oliver, president of Mississippi Valley State University.

The need for a new president dates back to last summer, when current president Hazo Carter announced his retirement following a no confidence vote from the university's faculty. He will remain on the staff as president emeritus until 2014, tasked with helping the new president transition into the role.

The three were chosen from a "very large" applicant pool, Rowe said. Hemphill, Jackson and Oliver stood out from the as many as 30 other applicants because of their extensive educational experience and their personal educational attainment, Rowe explained.

"I think you're going to find the academic qualifications are outstanding," Rowe said, adding that all three have administration and fundraising experience as well.

All three have advanced degrees and previous leadership roles in higher education, according to a news release. Hemphill received a doctorate in higher education administration and policy studies from the University of Iowa, and previously worked as the dean of students at the University of Arkansas. Jackson earned her doctorate in accounting from the University of Texas before working as the Dean of the College of Business and Information Science at Tuskegee University. Oliver previously worked as the provost/vice president for academic affairs at Edward Waters College in Florida. She earned a doctorate in curriculum and teaching from the University of North Carolina.
