EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Police in riot gear dispersed rowdy Michigan State fans who poured into the streets following their team's loss in the Final Four, resulting in about 60 arrests.

Most of the arrests were for disorderly conduct, police said Sunday.

The fans had gathered downtown and outside nearby apartment complexes after Michigan State lost 87-71 to North Carolina in the NCAA semifinals Saturday night.

The disturbances marred an upbeat atmosphere that had lasted all week. The community had been in a festive mood since its men's and women's team qualified for their Final Fours.

At a news conference Sunday, at which police released preliminary arrest figures, authorities described the crowds as tamer than in past years.

``If you look at where we'd been and where we are (now), we have made considerable progress,'' Michigan State president Lou Anna Simon said. ``There are a lot of things that didn't happen.''

In 1999, after Michigan State lost to Duke in the semifinals, more than 10,000 people ran through downtown East Lansing, overturning cars, setting fires and smashing storefronts. Police responded with tear gas and arrested 132 people, including 71 Michigan State students.

In 2000, the atmosphere was joyous but peaceful in a large celebration of the men's national championship on campus and in downtown East Lansing.

Eighteen people were arrested following a disturbance during the 2003 NCAA men's tournament.

I always wondered why white people think we (HBCUs) are party schools. We can't hold a candle to the way they get down. :smh: Let UNC beat Illinios Monday. They'll be flipping over cars, setting bon fires while jumping over them naked, fighting and the whole 9 on Franklin Street. lol On most PWC campuses there are bars at least within walking distances of the dorms. *smh*

...Carry On..

The sad thing about that is many black people feel the same way. I wish I had a dime for everytime I've heard a black person refer to HBCUs as party schools. There are a lot of high school students out there who believe this madness. It makes me want to :splat: when I hear students around here say that they want to go to UA and Auburn because they say that A&M and State are party schools.
