Mason: Southern can't survive proposed cuts

"Leader of Kings"
BATON ROUGE - Southern University's system president said proposed cuts to their budget could break the SU System next year.

Dr. Ronald Mason said Friday the Baton Rouge campus was already working on plans for a projected $8 million in cuts in next year's budget, only to find out they may now have to shoulder a total of $24 million in reductions.

The Jindal administration's proposed budget for next year includes as much as $383 million in higher education cuts. Southern's share of the budget would drop from the current $51 million in revenue they're receiving to $17 million for the entire system.

I'm so glad I don't live in a state where the Governor's ancestors are from a country where rat meat is a delicacy.

I thought yall said that these cuts were "ALREADY" made? Hmmm.....seems like someone lied.
Lol that's sure is what somebody said right after I posted a thread regarding the issue. One person even got smart by the mouth and said we have fixed the problem and we ok. Well from what I'm still reading SU and Gsu haven't done jack. While yall want to get smart with me you need to get smart with bobby Jindal or who ever slashing them budgets. I'm in Mississippi where jsu is ok and about to become 3rd largest public university soon so dnt get smart with me save the Entergy for good ole bobby Jindal. Lol

Honestly it's all Jindal fault. Jindal has drained almost all of the state accounts. Even using the rainy day funds bringing them from $700 million to $400 million. He has set the entire higher education in Lousiana up for failure. Only the rich can survive. And mason doesn't have the connections nor a proper plan to pull SU through. I was glad he left jsu.

And this might be the part where Dr. Llorens will be greatly missed. Shame that he was outed; he seemed to be a man of ingenuity with a lot of practicality as well. Really hope SU & GSU will be alright.

Some may fact, some may be a little exaggeration. Mason is probably sounding the alarms so loud as an offensive measure to limit the cuts.

I agree. I watch his video conference with the alumni and it sounds like Dr. Mason doesn't want the Southern University System to be left out without a voice at the table when other system presidents voice their opinions to the State legislators. But as a graduate of Southern University, we should never let down our guard.

Higher Education is a political game like no others.

Jindal has put together a budget that would not cut into higher education, but would decrease tax credits.

He knows the the National Democratic Party is about to blast him for screwing up the State's budget and blaming it on declining oil prices.
