STEM education is getting the “Magic City Classic” treatment.

Alabama State and Alabama A&M Universities, two historic institutions with longstanding traditions of academic excellence, are partnering to sponsor the Magic City Classic STEM Connection Conference on Oct. 28-29 at the Birmingham Sheraton Hotel.

The conference will highlight the global impact of STEM disciplines -- science, technology, engineering and mathematics -- and will facilitate discussions and presentations that are significant to K-12 students, their principals, teachers and counselors.

The conference also will showcase potential industry and government partnerships aimed at increasing opportunities for research, industry guidance, workforce development and community awareness.

The STEM forums will include a diverse mix of discussions and presentations facilitated by ASU and Alabama A&M’s researchers and subject matter experts.

More than 3,000 students, as well as secondary and postsecondary administrators, are expected to attend the two-day conference.

STEM grads are in demand

Companies both big and small are vying to recruit the same small pool of highly sought-after students graduating with STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – degrees.

“At the top schools like a Stanford [or] MIT, it’s pretty common for students to get anywhere from 5 to 10 offers,” said Jessica Gilmartin, chief business officer for Piazza, a platform that connects these students with potential employers.

What might be even more astonishing is “the recruiting season for the industry is incredibly short and most of these students have their jobs completely locked down by November, even for internships,” said Gilmartin.
