HAMPTON — As Hampton University continues to expand its academic programs, the institution's physical presence is stretching well beyond its historic campus and into the greater Hampton Roads region.
Hampton University's growth into neighboring areas, however, has drawn a mixed reaction from neighbors of its latest project.
This month, city officials gave the university permission to build a biomedical research center on the campus and to expand its equestrian stables in Buckroe. The university plans to build an indoor riding ring, new stables and an office along North Mallory Street. Once complete, the property could house as many as 15 horses.
Beyond its main campus, the university also recently purchased the 13-story Harbour Centre building in downtown, and it operates the Proton Therapy Institute off Magruder Boulevard in North Hampton and a satellite campus in Virginia Beach.
As HU expands, it is also investing in its main campus, a move lauded by the city's mayor.
"The city of Hampton deeply values its relationship with Hampton University," Mayor Molly Joseph Ward said. "We are delighted to see their continued growth and expansion."
HU President Dr. William R. Harvey was chosen last year to lead a group of business, education and community leaders being asked to devise a plan to rejuvenate downtown Hampton.
On the university's campus, a 20,000-square-foot, two-story biomedical research facility was approved by the city this month. The college received an $8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health in January 2010 to help fund construction of the facility along East Queen Street on campus near the university's new cafeteria.
"The Hampton University Biomedical Center illustrates the extraordinary progress Hampton has made in expanding our research agenda," said Harvey at the time of the grant announcement. "We have made great strides in conducting scientific research and developing technologies that address major health issues which affect our society today."
