Dr. Tommie "Tonea" Stewart, renowned actress and dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Alabama State University, helped start an award in 1988 to honor up-and-coming artists in her home state of Mississippi. Now almost 30 years later, she is a recipient of the very honor she helped to conceive.

The Governor’s Arts Award will be given to Stewart in recognition of her excellence in acting during the 28th annual Governor’s Awards ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday Feb 11, 2016, at Duling Hall in Jackson, Miss.

The Governor’s Arts Award is presented annually to outstanding writers, artists, performers, craftsmen and educators who have made significant and lasting contributions through their work as well as to corporations or organizations on the basis of their dedication to arts advancement.
