"Leader of Kings"
The Southern University men's basketball program got a nice boost, thanks to a new NCAA rule.
Peter Cipriano, a 6-foot-9 forward who was a first-team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection, will have another year of eligibility because of a rule concerning nonqualifiers.
The rule, enacted in April, allows athletes to be eligible for a fourth year of eligibility if the athlete has 80 percent of his coursework completed through four years. Previously, nonqualifiers had to graduate with their class in four years in order to get another year of eligibility.
After already particpating in Senior Day activities, Cipriano had considered transferring to a Division II school in order to have a fourth season of eligibility. He won't have to make that move now.
"That's a good thing. That's very good," first-year SU coach Rob Spivery said. "I'm very pleased we'll get a chance to coach him."
Cipriano averaged 10.1 points and a team-best 9.2 rebounds per game. He also made 56.8 percent of his shots. His rebounding average and shooting percentage both finished second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
