With wave of COVID-19 cases impacting HBCU basketball, it’s time to postpone the season

just focus on getting to the tournament so we can get that NCAA money. Even if we use the few games we can get as nothing but practice. Shut the season down late February, put everyone in a bubble for two weeks before postseason.

Just do round-ups once a month for every other sport, get the tournaments in - that's it.

I'm thoroughly surprised they haven't gone the bubble route yet. It's the only way that has been proven to significantly decrease exposure to the virus.

If you let these players interact with other students or the public, you will get a case.

SWAC Spring Football to...
Ghostrider and IT662, mentioned putting the basketball players in a bubble, if possible.
When does training start for the football players and when is the season supposed to start?
Is it possible to put the players in a bubble?

Basically now but if you can get 3 games in (1 per month) that’s enough for me. You can’t bubble them per say

As for hoops - it’s about 13 games and postseason at this point.

It's supposed to start sometime this month I believe because they are supposed to get a month to train before the season starts

It's easier to socially distance for football plus it's open air compared to basketball but still means more people will be together and an increase chance of a spike.

You can't bubble a football team. It's either socially distance a reduced crowd with no interactions between fans and athletes afterwards or no fans in the stands at all

Nothing at this point as far as a season is going to be canceled again

You are right. I know it's easy to say "cancel the season" until this stuff is gone but this stuff might not be under control for a couple of years with the way the vaccines are being rolled out so it's just hope and pray for the best. This is still a business so while it's easy to say "just shut it down", those bills still gotta get paid. Wait 1-2 years without football if you want and it's gonna be a lot of schools in the same boat as Valley

That's the long range thinking people need to start opening themselves up to. If you cancel Spring, you can't guarantee a Fall football season either. If you go TWO straight Falls with no football, you'll start having players (and coaches) leave to conferences that will play.

Black folks are still running around going to clubs with no masks, having family gatherings with no masks, and are puffing their chests out about not taking the vaccine. Covid isn't going anywhere. At some point, you'll have to find a way to manage through it or shut everything down (CLASSES INCLUDED) until the virus is no longer a major illness.

Is anyone willing to do this?

Athletes -- pro and college -- do not like being isolated in a bubble. NBA players talked about how much they struggled mentally and emotionally.

College football players expressed similar sentiments, too.

But the larger issue is that our elected officials and policymakers have done little to nothing to slow the spread of COVID in the 10 months since the virus reached the country. The situation is far more worse now than it was last March and April, but nobody is talking about going on a lockdown. It's just keep everything open, wear a mask, and hope the vaccines work while the cases skyrocket.

There is going to have to be a trade-off here. If we want schools open and sports to be held safely, there have to be stronger mitigation measures first. Right now, we want to do everything without any restrictions. We (government leaders included) don't want to make any sacrifices to get out of this horror. With this being the reality, hard decisions are going to have to be made.

No matter how the tournament goes, the NCAA is committed to giving all conferences their NCAA Tourney conference share this year.

One of the thing a lot of you who are posting are missing is that they are STUDENTS first. College athletes cannot be placed in a bubble like the NBA. I cay cancel the basketball and football season.

CV19 has a way of segregating the mentally strong from the mentally shallow, obviously.

I should have taught courses in Social Distancing 101 and Don't Do It Unless It's Required 301. smgdh

If students(-athletes) are fully committed to being mentally shallow and congregating en masse, x-all sports for their own safety since they obviously do not care for their own physical health w/ partying/clubbing et al unnecessary stupidity involving interfacing in large communicable groups w/ others/strange folk.

I think that by April or May we should have two additional CV19 vaccines either FDA approved or available for EUA and if that is the case anyone in the general population who is willing to take the vaccine will be able to get it. Actually, Biden is purposing a much more ambitious vaccination plan which may or may not be implemented but with either case vaccination of the general population should be underway by late Spring. In the meantime, we are still dealing with a very contagious and potentially deadly virus and have to strictly adhere to NPI's as much as possible.

You're expecting athletes to sacrifice not gathering when everyone around them, including elected officials, are making it nearly impossible for them to function in a low-risk environment?

While the public does have some responsibility, policymakers have enabled them every step of the way. You can't say don't gather, travel or go this place or that place when you're still allowed to do all those things.

These players are basically in a small bubble already since most schools have been doing online classes since after Thanksgiving and students don't come back to campus till this upcoming weekend for class after the MLK holiday. They are getting it from hanging out with family in places they shouldn't be. They are not getting it from hanging out on campus by themselves.

let them play ball and work through it...if they don't care how serious this virus is by now oh well..it's exhausting to get people to care about their own health
