I agree with you. I was taught that it would be 1.

But I asked my sons who are 24 and 20 and they say 16.

"Some" Calculators will give you 16.

But......The bigger question for me is....How can math rules change?

Wow!!! I can understand theorems and postulates might change, but I guess order of operation is situational.
16 is right. after you done the parenthesis, everything else is done in order left to right.
So order of operation no longer is used in math?

Still using order of operations. 8/2(2+2)
1.P 2+2 is first b/c of the parenthesis
2.E no exponents
3.MD only thing left is division & multiplication and those are done in order from left to right.

This equation is written this way purposely to stir up debate. Usually you'd see it written like this:
