What if Louisiana Universities Specialized?

Imagine this.

You're a high-schooler thinking about college and your choice comes down to just one thing — programming.

It's not that hard to imagine. Along with location and money, desired major already is a key deciding factor.

But take it a step further. You're not just choosing the "best" nursing program of the many in Louisiana, for example. Maybe you're choosing the only school in the state that offers nursing — or at least one of the few.

In this hypothetical situation, Louisiana universities are streamlined in such a way as to eliminate duplication. No longer does every public higher education institution have some of the same programs.

This isn't so hypothetical, though. Since 2008-09, the University of Louisiana System has eliminated or consolidated 387 degree programs, President and CEO Jim Henderson said.

My question is what about Grambling and Southern? How would this affect them. At one time GSU had the best Education program and Nursing program in the state. Additionally, the only accredited Master of Public Administration Program in the state. Of course SU has a tough as nails engineering program. It will be interesting as the debate goes on.
