About the Organization: Workplace Fairness is a national non-profit organization that provides information, education, and assistance to individual workers and their advocates nationwide and promotes public policies that advance employee rights, through our publications and award-winning website at
www.workplacefairness.org. Our goals are that workers and their advocates are educated about workplace rights and options for resolving workplace problems and that policymakers, members of the business community, and the public at large view the fair treatment of workers as both good business practice and sound public policy.
Workplace Fairness (WF) was founded in 1994 as the National Employee Rights Institute (NERI). The name of the organization was changed in 2001 to more accurately express our mission. Although currently headquartered in San Francisco, California, we have one telecommuting employee in the Washington, DC metro area, and will consider moving the organization?s headquarters to one of the following metropolitan areas, consistent with the leading candidate?s preferences and the needs of the organization: Washington, DC; New York, NY; Chicago, IL; or Los Angeles, CA.
Workplace Fairness is seeking an Executive Director to inspire and lead WF?s staff and board in its continuing efforts to promote and achieve fairness in the workplace. Current priorities for WF include:
? Making our website accessible to more communities of workers by translating it into foreign languages and making it accessible to disabled workers;
? Using our website, e-publications and online strategies to build community and mobilize workers around workplace issues;
? Advocating for employee rights and working with other like-minded individuals and organizations by expanding the organization?s involvement in coalitions and collaborative work;
? Building the administrative infrastructure (personnel, finance, database, technology, etc.) to support WF?s growth; and
? Assuring continued financial stability, consistent with our program goals, by broadening our base of individual supporters and contributors as well as foundation support.
The Executive Director of Workplace Fairness manages, coordinates, and facilitates the development and maintenance of all programs and key partnerships, and provides the support necessary to ensure the smooth operation and continuity of WF?s web-based outreach, education and advocacy. The Executive Director will report to a 20-member national board of directors and supervise a staff of three. Workplace Fairness? current annual operating budget is $450K.
Experience with fundraising, grant writing, and working with foundations is essential. Strong writing and speaking skills are a necessity, as is an innovative and entrepreneurial understanding of successful nonprofits and/or Internet-based communications strategies. A track record of developing successfully integrated public relations, marketing, and fundraising campaigns, preferably combining online and offline components, is highly desirable. Ideally, the candidate will also have experience managing a small, independent agency and/or supervising a remote and independently-functioning work unit, and will show a demonstrated commitment to workers rights? issues and the goals of Workplace Fairness.

Responsibilities: The Executive Director is responsible for leading and managing Workplace Fairness and will strategically communicate WF?s programs and initiatives to funders, media, staff, board and the public. The Executive Director will move WF forward by implementing the internal and external objectives related to the organization?s mission. In addition, the Executive Director will focus on developing the internal structure and budget to support current programs and future growth.
Fund Development
The Executive Director will be the lead fundraiser for WF and will:
? Develop a long-range, sustainable, diverse funding plan to ensure that WF?s strategic goals are implemented and achieved
? Develop and implement an annual marketing and fundraising plan
? Proactively develop funding proposals, prepare grant applications, and coordinate fundraising activities
? Actively seek new revenue sources ? foundation, private, earned income, government, and corporate ? to meet program goals
? Maintain and expand WF?s individual donor base
? Monitor grant objectives and maintain reporting to funders
? Ensure the growth of cash reserves
Operations (including Staff and Finances)
? Provide leadership and direction for the organization
? Prepare annual budget and develop plan to meet financial needs of program
? Supervise staff and coordinate management of financial and administrative procedures in order to maintain fiscally sound programs and accounting systems
? Supervise audits, preparation of expenditure reports, and all other fiscal reports
? Oversee banking transactions and tax preparation
? Hire, fire, manage staff and independent contractors, to ensure operational effectiveness
? Work with staff to develop ongoing work plans
? Provide for staff development activities that upgrade employee skills and motivate performance
Board Administration
? Assist the Board with ongoing strategic planning that is responsive to the needs of the organization to effectively define and achieve its vision
? Support and provide Board with adequate information to help members reach sound decisions and establish policies
? Ensure and facilitate the Board?s involvement in the formation of WF?s policies and programs and supervise the implementation of Board-approved policies
? Assist in the recruitment, orientation, and training of new Board members as part of a more diverse board membership
? Work with Board leadership to develop an engaged, effective, energized Board
Program Implementation and Oversight
? Maintain familiarity with WF?s programs and objectives
? Ensure compatibility of program decisions with WF?s mission
? Ensure that all staff members have all program information necessary to fulfill their jobs
Community Relations
? Participate in conferences, meetings, and community events to further WF?s goals and increase awareness and visibility of the organization
? Establish and maintain productive relationships with other organizations advocating for a fair workplace
? Represent organization where appropriate
Qualifications:
? Proven experience and ability in fundraising (including understanding of and connections to funding communities), nonprofit fiscal management, and budget preparation
? Minimum 3 years nonprofit management experience, with a strong understanding of the nonprofit sector and of the particular needs of a small organization
? Working knowledge or experience with using the Internet to raise money, stimulate action and advocacy, and educate target audiences about issues and programs through integrated online campaigns
? Excellent written and verbal communication skills
? Experience working with boards of directors and nonprofit organizations
? Demonstrated experience in engaging and working with diverse communities

? A self-directed, energetic, tenacious leader, strong collaborator and facilitator
? Familiar with legal and/or workplace issues
We welcome applicants who have worked in larger nonprofit organizations and are seeking a leadership position in a small, progressive nonprofit as well as candidates who have experience with fundraising, foundations, or donor services. For those with backgrounds outside of the fundraising or philanthropic sectors, we seek those who are deeply engaged in social justice issues, have good networks that can be brought to the organization, and have management experience.
Salary: Competitive, DOE, plus medical, dental and vision benefits, three weeks paid vacation first year, and retirement plan eligibility after one year. This is a full-time exempt position.
