The Unemployment Insurance (UI) program is one of the largest income maintenance programs in the Federal government. Although UI benefits are paid by the states, the Department of Labor has overall responsibility for administering the program, including assuring that state laws and practices meet Federal UI requirements and that states follow the requirements for the administration of Federal programs.
