By Nate Olson/OF THE COMMERCIAL STAFF
After a three-month search, Arkansas-Pine Bluff has hired a new athletic director.
According to UAPB sports information director Carl Whimper, University of South Carolina assistant athletic director for compliance, Craig Curry, was offered the job earlier this week and accepted.
"Craig Curry has been appointed the new athletic director at UAPB," Whimper said by phone from Atlanta where he is attending the a national UAPB alumni conference. "We are going to formally introduce him (Curry) at a press conference next week."
Whimper said while a time and date have not been set for the press conference, it will take place on campus.
The vacancy was created when Hubert O. Clemmons announced his retirement, effective upon a replacement being named.
Clemmons, who was 77, died on July 5.
Shortly after Clemmons' death it was announced that three candidates were going to be interviewed and a replacement would be hired by the end of July.
Curry was in Pine Bluff a week ago and interviewed with UAPB Chancellor Lawrence A. Davis, Jr. and the search committee.
A week later Curtis Williams, the chair of UAPB's Health, Physical Education, Recreation Department, was interviewed.
A third party was expected to go through a similar process, but Whimper said Davis and the committee members had seen enough.
"He (Curry) was so impressive with his credentials and his affiliations with the Big 10 and SEC, that it was decided the process didn't need to go on, that after the second interview he (Curry) was going to be offered the job."
Curry has been the assistant athletic director for compliance at USC for four years. He was also an assistant athletic director for t for the Gamecocks for three years.
Before his stint at South Carolina, Curry worked as an academic counselor for the University of Michigan athletic department for six years.
Before he took his position at Michigan he was the athletic director at Albany (Ga.) State for two years.
Curry, who was a standout football player at Minnesota and a Miami Dolphins draft pick, started his career at IBM where he served for 16 years as an account marketing representative.
Curry earned a degree in business from the University of Miami in 1984 and a master's degree in athletic administration at Wayne (Mi.) State in 1997.
Curry and his wife Josephine have three children: Craig II, Andrea Monique and Christopher.
