Threats made to harm Black College Reunion visitors
DAYTONA BEACH -- The local NAACP office and Mayor Bud Asher received similar letters Wednesday threatening to kill or maim Black College Reunion visitors with homemade pipe bombs, the FBI said.
The local FBI office, Daytona Beach police and U.S. Postal Service are investigating the threats against the event, which is scheduled April 12-14.
The writer, who signed the letter as "B," claimed to have built two pipe bombs for use during BCR last year, but said proper detonators could not be obtained.
"This year I have nine pipe bombs and detonaters (sp) with a range of 75 yards," the letter to the NAACP states. "These will be placed in buildings, sewers, dumpsters and cars" from Daytona Beach Shores to Ormond Beach. "We will see how many . . . (expletive) will die or be maimed," the NAACP letter states.
The letters, which were typewritten and marked with a Daytona Beach postmark and post office box return address, contain several misspellings, typographical errors and racial epithets.
"We are treating this very seriously, and intend to have the matter vigorously investigated" officials say.
The NAACP letter addresses "Bud," and, on behalf of "we the citizens," appeals for an end to the annual event to "remove this blight from our beautiful city."
Despite the threat, officials believe that more security measures for the event are not necessary because there is already an "over presence" of police for the primarily black street party.
