The Pride of Bethune Cookman

Greetings band heads! With the Wil'cats coming on board, here's our two cents to add to the SWAC flavor.

Congrats ! I’m excited that y’all will be getting some swac bands to Daytona now... can’t wait for the boom and the pride to link again.. 😬

Going to Daytona in 08 has to be one of my favorite college memories. It was my first time seeing the beach & ocean, and we stayed in a nice hotel. Of course on game day we smashed Cookman’s band & go up out of there.

I’m excited for the kids who’ll get to travel there now with BCU in the conference.

I think that you will have to update your book. That might have worked in the MEAC but won’t cut it in the SWAC. Every band have their signature songs but have up to date songs as well. We played y’all in 2016. Y’all sounded good but was very boring.

BCU get aggressive and it’s a wrap lol

same for FAMU.

when we sat across from them in 08 they were the loudest band I’ve ever heard in my life simply from their numbers. If they decide to ever play with power they’d turn a lot of heads

atl hornet, what is your definition of power?

Playing forte or fortissimo with control. Not just mindless blasting. A band can be loud, but they can also lack power. It’s kind of difficult to explain.

This is just mindless blasting

Bad technique, bad embouchure, cracking notes, etc.

this is playing with power

Yea they are puffing their cheeks as well, but it sounds in control

2:20 till the end on their “cranking” part, it’s being played under control

SU, JSU & to a lesser degree Dega do a great job playing with power.

I’ll be the first one to say sometimes when I marched at ASU we were just loud but lacked power

Ok. In my opinion, FAMU has always played through the complete range of all dynamics. I don’t want to start any type of argument between any band but it seems like you are using the upper register (SU Chase) to be the definition of power. Would this clip of FAMU’s bones be considered power?

In my younger days, I had blinders on when it came to FAMU. As I got older, I learned to appreciate what different bands brought to the stadium. Some days I want to hear nothing but straight ignance and other days I’m in a calm mood. Now to get back on subject, I think 2004 was a good year for BCU (BCC at the time).

it’s not the high notes in that fanfare..it’s the overall section. It’s loud, but in control. Even if they didn’t scream, it would still be powerful. And yes, that clip you posted is power.

here’s FAMU trumpets playing with power, & nobody is screaming

Famu since the reorganization ain’t the same sound wise - a far cry from the 90s
I agree, but they don't sound bad and they are getting better. Right now, they are closer to their sound of the mid 80s just not as crisp. Their trumpets are getting back to the point of where they are sitting on top of the band and the bones are getting back to their glory days.

I'm tracking what you are saying. I would say they, in both clips (SU and FAMU), are playing with a full sound. I think those were the years of
Glendon going crazy in the upper register. I listen to that clip at least once a month wishing I could have heard it in person.

yea, I should have said a full sound instead of power, but in my opinion it’s the same thing.

theres a huge difference between just being loud, & playing with power/a full sound.

Some other good examples of playing with a full sound
