The grandson of Peabody's legendary basketball coach (Coach Smith) signed with Alabama State

hornets signed a pg from tift co., ga in the early period. they won 7a state championship this season. micah johnson.

Looks like we have our guards positions taken care of. Looking forward to see them playing for us next season

I thought he was looking at going to Southern.

It seems like once he moved to Atlanta, the ASU coach was able to get into his ear. I'm sure the ASU coach see this as a win-win situation by getting Coach Smith's grandson and opening a relationship with one of Louisiana's top high school basketball programs.

Although he is Coach Smith's grandson, this is the kid (Cedric Russell) I would have loved to seen wear the blue and gold as the point guard. He's a lot better than Coach Smith's grandson. Now that Johnnie Jones is no longer at LSU, the kid has signed with ULL. I'm sure LSU is re-building its program from the bottom.

The kid also set the State free throw record in the semi-final game before winning the State title:

I remember reading that article about him in the Alexandria paper saying he was going to SU, but I'm not sure SU offered him. And I remember him saying on social media that the article wasn't correct.

When I worked in Alexandria Louisiana at KALB-TV, I Covered this young man during his freshman and sophomore at PEABODY. I knew he would play on someone's college team one day especially with the coaching from his grandfather. Coach LewJACK has a good player coming to ASU.

Are you sure. I remember one of my friends from Alexandria asked him last year and he said they wanted him to walkon.

Maybe I was given bad info, I'm not sure, but any congrats to Bama st and this young man. Both his parents went to SU.

Ross had received an offer from fellow SWAC school Southern, but has signed with the Hornets.

I posted this to show that at one point he was offered by SU. Also you do realize his name wouldn't show under that screenshot you posted if he's already committed or signed to another school, right?
Is it really that important? lol

IMO, Peabody's 79 team was the best they had. Before there was a Michael Jordan, there was a Russell Jones. I still don't understand why Russell wasn't a top recruit like Paul Thompson who played for Tulane and later drafted by Cleveland Cavaliers.

Peabody's pillar of success: Charles Smith

The high school basketball player from CENLA with the most success was Bobby Tudor from Pineville High School. Him and his brother John who attended LSU gave Peabody some great battles back in the days. He's now part owner of a $12 billion dollar oil investment bank. He's a good example that there's more than just basketball.
