Many investors pool their money in a mutual fund, allowing them to own many more investments than they could buy alone. A single fund might own thousands of individual stocks or bonds, for example. This diversification reduces some of the risk of investing.

By banding together, mutual fund investors also obtain the services of a professional money manager. The manager will buy and sell investments to meet the fund’s overall objective, such as growth or income.
