I saw the ballot and if coaches and SID's don't act shady, it should end up like this

Burks should get SWAC Player of the Year

Thurston or Allen Lovett will get newcomer

McDonald will get defensive player of the year because he's competing against only one other player who is inconsistent.

Rush is the only freshman that's playing a lot and he has some nice numbers.

that is the catch right there.. AAMU's SID wouldnt know what a basketball was if it wasnt for the internet... so he probably will go strictly by numbers and help the cause out. I dont think nobody from AAMU will make the team. Hellicopter had a pretty good season, but missed a lot of games with his knee injury.

I just didnt see too many standout players this year...not enough to even make a second team.... I agree with most of the pics that were made on here already especially Burks, Thurston, Hollis, McDonald and Haynes.

Prairie View's Gregory Burk heads All-SWAC Team

http://www.swacpage.com/article452.shtml

Gregory Burks, a 5-10 senior guard, who helped lead the Panthers of Prairie View A&M to their first regular season conference title in forty-one years, has been voted Player of the Year in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Teammate Malachi Thurston was tabbed SWAC Newcomer of the Year. Grambling State teammates Brion Rush and William McDonald were named Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year respectively. The 2002-03 All-SWAC Basketball team is selected in voting by the head coaches and sports information directors of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Burks, a native of Flint, Michigan, ranked first in SWAC scoring (18.5 ppg), second in FT% (82.2), third in steals (1.81) and fourth in assists (4.44). He is joined on the first team by Texas Southern guard Ra?Kim Hollis (18.4 ppg), Mississippi Valley State forward Attarrius Norwood 16.9 ppg), Grambling State?s forward Paul Haynes (17.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and GSU center William McDonald (8.3 rpg, 2.86 blks).

The All-SWAC second team consists of guards Malcolm Campbell (Alabama State), Brion Rush (Grambling State), forwards Peter Cipriano (Southern), Malachi Thurston (Prairie View) and center Roderick Riley (Prairie View). Eight players were selected as Honorable Mention All-SWAC.

Overall, Grambling State had five players honored (2 first team), as did Prairie View (1 first team).Mississippi Valley State players earned three spots (1 first team) followed by Texas Southern (2), Southern (2) and Jackson State (2). Alabama State, Alcorn State and Ark.-Pine Bluff had one player each.

The All-SWAC players will be presented with their awards at the SWAC Awards Banquet on Thursday, March 13th, in Birmingham, Alabama at The Harbert Center. The banquet is held as part of the activities as a prelude to the SWAC Basketball Tournament, March 14-15.

Congrats to Burks... I have watched him play since his freshmen year and knew that one day he would become MVP.

When I look at some of these folks stats.... Anthony "Hellicopter" Hayes should have at least made honorable mention.... he averaged 14 points and 6 rebounds and scored in double figures every game except 4.

mcdonald had 83 blocks, 10 in one game....
the closest person to him had 37 plus he is an o.k. defensive player.

i understand where you coming from but the SWAC didnt really have any good centers this year.... From what I saw McDonald was the only good one... I am sure Riley had some up and down games, so I couldnt judge him from what I saw in Huntsville. The SWAC is a legue which features guards. How many blocks did McDonald have in the "money games".

I am definitely trying to discredit him because he was a beast down here, but he simply didnt have any competition.

against Riley, McDonald looked like a forward playing out of position. But McDonald only had competition from TSU's Jerome Bell for the defensive POY. It was an easy choice.

*WHAT WOULD A "MONEY GAME" BE? A GAME THAT YOU WIN OR ONE THAT YOU WERE EXPECTED TO LOSE. (EXPLAIN)
*HIS POSITION HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM BEING ABLE TO BLOCK SHOTS AND GET REBOUNDS. SOMETIMES BEING TALL AND CLOSE TO THE BASKET HELPS.
*IT IS MORE TO DEFENSE THAN BLOCKED SHOTS..BUT YOU SHOULD ALREADY KNOW THAT.
