SWAC alters punishments over fight

From Special Reports

After further review of game film of the Sept. 22 game between Jackson State and Mississippi Valley in Itta Bena, Southwestern Athletic Conference interim commissioner James Frank has altered the initial fines and suspensions leveled against the two schools.

Valley was fined $1,500 instead of $1,000 as was initially handed down. In addition, the reprimand against JSU coach Robert Hughes was lifted. The $1,000 fine and the reprimand against the school will stand.

Increased security

Due to the tragic events of Sept. 11, Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium officials announced increased security measures for JSU home football games. All fans will be subject to search prior to entering the stadium. There will be searches of purses, and no bags can be brought into the stadium.

Mississippi Valley

Mississippi Valley State linebacker Nicholas Peoples and MVSU kick returner Terrell Adams have been named defensive player of the week and special teams player of the week respectively in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Peoples, who shared the defensive honor with Alabama A&M's Rashard Watson, had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery in the Delta Devils' 68-13 loss to Sam Houston State. Adams returned five kickoffs for 171 yards.
