SU Enrollment Raising the Roof

During the August 20, 2021 meeting of the Southern University Board of Supervisors, each of the campus chancellors was asked to provide an update on the status of enrollment management. Enrollment was reported as trending upwards at each of the campuses. The Shreveport campus was the most skeptical as classes there do not start until August 29, and the chancellor was hoping the pandemic surge would not hamper enrollment growth at the commuter college. As for SUBR, housing officials are scrambling to arrange for off-campus housing as far south as LSU, as enrollment soars. As of Thursday, August 19, 2021, the 4th day of classes, SUBR had enrolled 7476 students compared to this time last year when only 6818 had enrolled - a difference of +658. And this does not include students who are cross-enrolled through SU-Connect and LSU. The state of Louisiana counts enrollment numbers at its universities as of the 14th day of classes, or not until September 2, 2021, in the case of SUBR. By then SUBR's enrollment could exceed 8,000 for the first time in more than 2 decades.. The Law School is reporting an enrollment of 920, its largest class ever, While SUBR is poised to break ground on 800 new student housing spaces (an Honors Dorm, a Freshmen Dorm, an upperclassmen Apartment Complex) this school year, still the university anticipates losing students to other campuses due to its current housing shortage.

Southern University announced on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 a nearly 20% increase in first-time students enrolled on the Baton Rouge campus, bringing the preliminary fall student count to 7,404 for under-graduate and graduate students and 920 law students. All total, more than 8,300 students roam the SUBR landmass for fall 2021. That number could grow by nearly 100 when final enrollment figures are submitted by the end of the fall semester. Counted among its 920 law students is well-known & first-year law student, Amarosa Manigault Newman, a former Trump administration protege and author of the book publication "Unhinged.".

As of the October 22, 2021 meeting ot the Southern University BOS, enrollment numbers for SUBR is 8,359 students (7416 Undergrads & Grads and 913 SULC). Enrollment for the Southern University System is 13,363. As for new construction on the BR campus, $48M is in place for construction of the new STEM complex, $38M for the new Business complex, $48M for New Student Life Center, $36M for new Honors Dorm, $36M for other new Dormitories/Living Spaces, $500K for demolition of Jessse Owens Hall, and $5M for new roads & pathways. Additionally SU is studying expanding its curriculum to include Construction Management. It appears Southern has secured the necessay funding ($32M) to address the erosion issues along the riverfront on the Baton Rouge campus. A great deal of gratituide is owed to Senator Cleo Fields and the Legislative Delegation for bringing together the powers-that-be to secure those funds.

I also want to add that the university soon will move up research classification.

The search for a new SU President begins officially on November 10th. These men and women will be charged with the task of making the final selection to head the nation's only HBCU system. The job, which comes with a salary and benefits package approaching $600.000, should attract a healthy field of candidates.
