On November 12, 1922 on the campus of (then) an all-white Butler University, seven school teachers shared the same belief that there could be no Great Progress for the Black community without providing Great Service. Just 2 years after Women's Suffrage ended with the right to vote, these school teachers desired better for Black women, their children, and the communities in which they lived. In an effort to promote scholarship, leadership, and community service, these seven school teachers founded the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and devoted the first 3 years to community service. 89 years later, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc continues to honor the legacy & vision of the Founding Seven.
