I'm a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, based at our bureau in Atlanta. I am working with another reporter here on a possible story on the growing interest among high-school marching bands in stepping away from their regimented roots as "corps-style" bands and starting to experiment with freer forms. Some high-school bands seem interested in adopting the high-energy style long practiced by historically black colleges.
For our story, we are interested in talking to high-school students in bands that are starting to change -- or in which the members themselves are pushing for such changes. We are also interested in talking to directors/college band members who have worked at summer band camps or elsewhere at the high-school level to help those schools learn the skills needed to make the leap away from traditional corps style.
