Florida A&M fans ready to saddle up for a showdown out West against Hampton on Nov.1 may need to hold their horses.
Despite the release of Florida A&M's 2003 football schedule with the Rattlers playing Hampton in San Francisco, no contract has been signed by either school for the game to take place at Pac Bell Park.
The game is a Hampton home game, but a deal is being worked out to move it to San Francisco as a classic.
FAMU athletic department business manager Robert Sewell said Thursday a letter had been submitted to the classic's organizer stating FAMU's intent to play in the first-ever Heritage Classic.
The tentative kickoff time is 4p.m. EST.
"We're above 80 percent that it's going to happen," Sewell said about the game being played in San Francisco.
FAMU athletic department officials have already begun to tell fans to make their travel arrangements for San Francisco.
Interestingly, Hampton's schedule still has the game being played in Hampton, Va., but head coach Joe Taylor told the Newport News Daily Press last week that he expects the game to be held in San Francisco.
Hampton athletic director Malcolm Avery was unavailable for comment Thursday.
According to Sewell, FAMU would not be paid any money to play in the classic, but the travel expenses of the team and the marching band would be covered.
Sewell also said that an agreement had been made in principle for the Urban Broadcasting Company to televise the game. FAMU recently signed a five-year television contract with UBC worth up to $24million.
Pac Bell Park is the home of major league baseball's San Francisco Giants.
A press conference kicking off the announcement of the classic is tentatively scheduled for July12 in San Francisco.
No ticket information for the game has been released at this time. The availability of travel packages could be announced at the press conference.
The Heritage Classic would be the fifth classic FAMU is scheduled to play this year. The Rattlers are also scheduled to play classics in Atlanta, Detroit, Indianapolis and Orlando.
