PVAMU new president update?

Anyone has any insider information on where PVAMU is on naming a new president? I heard no names for the position so far and really interested to know how it's going. I was thinking they would name someone before the beginning of the new school year.

Dr. Ruth Simmons is a highly accomplished leader and a great placeholder! I mean she was the president of an Ivy League institution (Brown), 2x Harvard graduate, and a Dillard alumna with deep black Texas roots ... it's gets no better than that lol. But the earlier PVAMU can get someone permanent the better. I've looked on PVAMU alumni website and facebook for finalists and couldn't find anything.

I'm sure Dr. Simmons will serve as interim for at least a year before a new president is named

I don't think that's good idea but I think you're right . In my opinion, it's always great to get the new leader in as soon as possible for stability purposes

We will be OK. PV is a stable university. Record enrollment ,the best HBCU campus in the country, strong academic programs, no accreditation issues, no financial issues, etc. Dr. Simmons has already communicated her plans and vision which will definitely add to all of that. Our last interim president served for a year as well. No need to rush a very important decision.

I agree with everything but the best HBCU of course.

She say she's not a placeholder or seat warmer...

Some may be curious about the role of an interim so let me tackle that first. I am not here to keep a chair warm or to simply temporize as you search for a new president. I am all in. I am here to provide the benefit of my 17 years as the president of two of the most highly ranked universities in the country and, 10 years before that, at the number 1 ranked university in the country: Princeton University. I have therefore been immersed for over thirty years in the question of how universities become great and how they sustain that greatness over long periods. So I come to Prairie View unprepared to make compromises and unprepared to support efforts that I know run counter to the enhancement of university life.

She's a placeholder. Her huge ego and elitism won't allow her to say it. But she sounds like she'll be an active placeholder which is what is needed

What do you mean ya'll separated from Hampton?

Because PV and Hampton are almost always mentioned when it comes to having the best HBCU campus by people who have visited most HBCUs. But as PV continues to implement the campus master plan, I think PV is the clear #1.

Oh I get it. PVAMU has the best HBCU campus in a rural setting in my opinion. I hear Hampton buildings are old and raggedy on the inside ... never heard that about PVAMU.

Interim President’s Houston Welcome Reception
September 22, 2017

Thursday evening, a Welcome Reception was held for Interim President Ruth J. Simmons at the Hilton Americas-Houston Hotel. Many Prairie View A&M University alumni, friends and community members were in attendance, excited to hear from the new leader of “The Hill”.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner provided brief remarks where he praised Simmons for her acceptance of the Interim President position at the University. ”We are so grateful that you are serving in this capacity at this time,” said Turner, “As long as I am Mayor, I hope that you will be Interim President of Prairie View.” Following his speech, Simmons interacted with the attendees; taking pictures, giving hugs and engaging in conversation. The Panther Ambassadors, a student organization, escorted guests to the main ballroom where remarks were made by the following individuals: Houston City Councilman Jerry Davis, PVAMU Student Government Association President Kendric D. Jones, members of the President’s Cabinet and Interim President Ruth J. Simmons.

During her speech, Simmons spoke about the University’s identity, its potential as a competitor and the students it produces. “Prairie View students set it apart,” said Simmons, “They are industrious, they are brave; they are caring, they are an asset to their future communities.” Following her closing remarks, Simmons opened the floor to guests and invited them to engage in dialogue about the University.

Another Welcome Reception for Simmons will be held in Dallas, TX to provide the Dallas alumni and friends an opportunity to meet and interact with the Interim President. The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thurs. October 5th at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. Registration is available online at www.pvamu.edu

Wow! A former Ivy League president is leading PVAMU. I'm in shock because I thought it was clear she didn't want the position.

I'm so happy for PVAMU! I'm almost sure her guidance and connections will bring PVAMU to greater heights! Texas HBCUs Rock!

How Prairie View A&M lured a former Ivy League president out of retirement

Ruth Simmons, a pioneering college administrator and the first black president of an Ivy League university, thought she was done leading colleges after she retired from Brown University. Five years later, she's back to lead Prairie View A&M.

PRAIRIE VIEW — It was not Ruth Simmons’ first time being memorialized on a T-shirt.

Still, seeing the purple “Ruth the Truth” shirts around the Prairie View A&M University campus during homecoming week made the former Brown University president put her hand to her face and shake her head.

“I cannot comment on another person’s bad idea,” she joked.

The purple shirts were a sign of the excitement on the historically black campus last week. Not only were students and alumni gearing up for the weekend’s festivities but also Simmons, a high-profile black administrator who took up the Prairie View presidency on an interim basis this summer, had just accepted the permanent job.

Simmons may be uncomfortable with all the attention, but she has given her new students a lot of reasons for enthusiasm. She was the first African-American to lead an Ivy League school and TIME magazine’s 2001 best college president. During 11 years at the helm of Brown University, she instituted need-blind admissions for students, created a initiative to study the university’s historical ties to slavery and led a $1.6 billion fundraising campaign. Once she is officially confirmed by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, she'll be Prairie View's first female president.

Her hire is something of a coup for Prairie View, a small, rural college with a relatively modest research faculty. Prairie View's endowment is $77 million; when Simmons was president of Brown, she secured more than one donation worth $100 million. Brown's acceptance rate is around 8 percent. Prairie View's is about 10 times higher. And when Simmons accepted the interim job at Prairie View, she insisted it would be only temporary because “I am old and I’m tired.”

New HBCU President-Elect Ruth Simmons Has Bold Plans for Prairie View

Last week, I sat down and spoke with Ruth Simmons, president-elect of Prairie View A&M University, former president of Brown University—the first black president of an Ivy League college and Brown’s first female president—former dean at Princeton, and former provost at Spelman.

Prairie View lured Simmons out of a short, five-year retirement to take on the position of interim president, which she started in July. Early this month, Simmons said yes to taking on the post permanently. The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents will confirm her as president at its next meeting. (Prairie View is a state school).

Before visiting the offices of Black Enterprise, Simmons had just the day before been part of the Princeton dedication ceremony of Morrison Hall, named in honor of Toni Morrison, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and emeritus professor at Princeton. Simmons was instrumental in bringing Morrison to Princeton, and Morrison has reportedly stated that Simmons was the reason she went.

Ruth Simmons, as they say, is crushing it.

‘The Students Are Terrific’

One gets the impression that the energy, ambition, civic-mindedness, and faith of Prairie View students are what drew Simmons to her new post.

“The students are terrific, ” she told me. “They’re socially oriented. They want to contribute to their communities. They talk very openly about their faith traditions.”

Simmons sees the activities students are involved in on campus as a kind of training ground or proving ground. But one crucial element is missing: a robust African American studies program, which, ironically, few historically black colleges offer.

“All this civic pride and community focus—I want the students to also have the background, to know enough about themselves, and to be able to move forward with a kind of confidence” that self-knowledge fosters.

Along with developing an African American studies program, Simmons plans to focus on academics in general, calling it “the most critical piece.”

“We have a lot of work to do in faculty recruitment, faculty development. We’re going to strengthen the curriculum and the teaching and scholarships. Faculty is the most important ingredient for a successful university,” Simmons says.

I'm praying Dr. Simmons will help Dr. Lane get his head in the game. He's more concerned with increasing enrollment and appeasing the students/alumni which are good but we have bigger fish to fry .... I mean he's just not seeing the big picture. But once PVAMU starts taking off, he's gonna have to take notice that he needs to step it up

Confirmation of Dr. Ruth J. Simmons as the 8th President of Prairie View A&M University takes place today.
