Officials mark opening of new northwest center

Prairie View A&M University has offered courses in northwest Harris County for more than 25 years, but university officials view ownership of the new Northwest Houston Center as a chance to expand and develop programs in the growing area.

The community came together Wednesday to celebrate a ribbon cutting for that facility at 9449 Grant Road, near Texas 249.

Prairie View bought the 52,000-square-foot building from the Lone Star College System in late 2009 for $8.9 million.

Until last spring, the building housed the LSC-Willowchase Center.

That facility was moved this summer to LSC's University Park campus on 45 acres bought from Hewlett Packard in April 2009.

Prairie View President George Wright said, "We will offer and start programs that we are confident will meet the needs of students in this area."

Prairie View officials envision enrollment at the Northwest Houston Center, now at 400, to increase to more than 2,000.
