Today, the 4th Monday in April, is recognized as Confederate Memorial Day in the Great State of Alabama. It is a day in which all State offices and some schools are closed in recognition of the confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. It should be noted, however, that the vast majority of these monuments were erected in the 1950's in reaction to early school desegregation actions and attempts.
