A great friend of mine played the sax for Dorothea Williams character in that movie. Her name is Tia Fuller and was nominated for a Grammy 2 years ago. She's also a Spelman College Alumnae.

Wow! Southern's and FAMU's marching bands sound really good. Southern's band is probably the most jazzy-sounding hbcu marching band in the country, due, no doubt, to its influence by and proximity to NEW ORLEANS, the birthplace of jazz. FAMU also has a tenet of a jazzy sound as well.

Let me know if I am off base with this opinion...

ive always thought the influence of jazz is heavy in the way SU arranges their tuba parts. A lot of their parts in songs reminds me of a double bass in that it moves a ton like in old jazz songs instead of having a simple bass rhythm like most tuba sections have.

SU’s tubas are the most underrated section in the history of HBCU bands IMO because they always have some complex moving parts and they hold it down.
