after a 0-5 start to the 2003 season, savannah state has given head football coach ken pettiford his walking papers. pettiford who was hired in june 2002 posted a 1 1/2 year record of 1-14 at ssu. his career coaching record is 33-58.

in five games this season, the tigers are averaging just 3 points a game and have been out-scored 205-18. ssu has not scored a TD in the first half since november 2002.

richard basil, a former ssu QB, who now coaches the ssu defensive backs was named interim head coach to finish out the season. basil is a native of demopolis, alabama and passed for 3,645 yds and 44 TD during his two years at ssu and led the tigers to a 16-3 record. most of those TDs went to nfl star shannon sharpe.

Pettiford became the Coach at Miss. Valley after Archie Cooley left and took half of the Coaches and players with him to Ark. Pine Bluff.........,

At AAMU, he was a victim of politics.........,

Then he goes to Savannah St. (after the death of legendary Bill Davis),a school that has yet to be competitive in 1-AA football....,

He is a good man, but bad breaks and his coaching record not necessarily a reflection of what he his capable of. Wish him well...,

Savannah State fires football coach after 0-5 start

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah State, off to an 0-5 start with the latest loss a 48-3 drubbing by previously winless Howard, fired coach Ken Pettiford on Monday and replaced him with assistant Richard Basil.

Pettiford posted a 1-14 record as head coach of the Tigers, with his only victory over Morris Brown last season. Morris Brown has since disbanded its football program.

Savannah State has been outscored 205-18 this season. "At this point, we refuse to accept it as a reflection of the players on our football team," said school president Carlton Brown in announcing the change. Basil was given the job as interim coach for the rest of the season.

Basil, a former Savannah State quarterback, is in his eighth year on the Tigers' coaching staff. He is the Tigers' seventh head coach in the last 10 years.

"There's no easy situation when you come in during the middle of a season," Basil said.
