Old School Boxing

Since this Pandemic, I've at various times relived the amazing energy from Boxing events back in the day. I was much too young in most of the 70s to understand everything but still, there was something I felt when names like Ali, Forman, Spinks, Frazier, Norton, Sugar Ray Leonard, Hagler, Duran, Holmes and a host of others were mentioned.

Ali was so petty. He had such good comedic timing. Last week was Leon Spinks birthday. Someone posted a funny pic of him on Instagram. It was hard not to laugh at people cracking jokes, especially when he had been close to dying. Nevertheless, out of curiosity I went and looked back and the exchanges between him and Ali. I figured the same man that labeled Frazier "The Gorilla" & Forman "The Mummy" had to have checked on Leon right. Sure enough he had called him "Dracula." No way could I interview Ali with a straight face. I wonder what nicknames he would have for current boxers. LOL!

What about the first fight against Sonny Liston, everyone said he would get slaughtered but he still got in Liston's head and shocked the world, one of my favorite fights ever. I think he nick named him big ugly bear LOL

Man back in the day, Ali was "must-see TV." He was the most recognizable person on the planet at one time.

I wasn’t alive during boxing’s heyday, but I remember my pops being a big fan of Holyfield & Roy Jones Jr in the 90s.

I remember one time he spent like $60 on a PPV, & the main event fight was over halfway through the first round. He was pissed & said he’d never order a PPV again lol

These days I follow Anthony Joshua, Gervonta Davis & this Philippine cat named Jerwin Ancajas

That happened a lot during Mike Tyson's career. It was often much more than $60 too. Lots of pissed off people back then. Try to go to the bathroom or kitchen before the fight. Come back and you missed the whole fight. Fight over in 92 seconds. :D

That's when we learned to just go to the sports bar for Mike Tyson fights. Pay the $20 or $30 fight cover charge and if the fight ends in the first round you won't be as mad as you would be if you paid $60 - $300 to watch at home. Or the crew just gather at one guy's house and split the PPV fee.

I enjoyed watching the heavyweights, but the best boxing was the welterweights and middleweights of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. That was boxing's heyday to me. Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Pernell Whitaker, The Motor City Cobra, Roy Jones, Jr., Oscar de la Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez, James Toney ... on and on. Those guys were some of the best boxers I've ever seen and, for a while, it seemed to be an endless supply of them. Seemed to always be an interesting fight with an interesting storyline on the horizon. Matchups where we wouldn't really know who would win before the fight which made them more interesting to watch. Most heavyweight fights were over when the contract was signed. You pretty much knew who would win. Not so with welterweights, middleweights, etc.

it’s a shame what has happened to the heavyweight division

Man we use to be at grandfather's house for every single boxing match in the. He would get every single Tyson PPV and we would record it on VHS. My dad still has all of those recordings. Great times for boxing.

Yo, anybody remember Mike Tyson vs. Mitch Green? This was an infamous incident as well. It added to the mystique of Tyson but it had potential as Mitch was the only one at that time that ever went the distance with Mike. In addition it happened at the famous store of Dapper Dan's, the brother who did the wardrobe for a lot of 80s rappers.

Classic....I remember LOL

James "Hardrock" Green vs. John "The Beast" Mugabi (1984)

These brothers were throwing leather. Don't miss out on the third round folks.
