Nuggets' Anthony cited for pot possession
By John Marshall, The Associated Press
DENVER ? Carmelo Anthony was cited for marijuana possession before getting on a team flight last week, but the Denver Nuggets' star says the drug was left in his backpack by a friend.
Anthony was issued a summons last Friday at Denver International Airport; he flew with his teammates to Milwaukee for the next day's preseason game but didn't play.

Anthony's attorney, Daniel Recht, said the marijuana was left in the bag by an out-of-town friend who borrowed the backpack last week.

"The friend obviously uses marijuana and left a small amount in the backpack when he returned it to Carmelo," Recht said Thursday. "Carmelo had no idea there was any marijuana in the backpack."

Anthony was charged with possessing less than 1 ounce of marijuana, a petty offense with a maximum $100 fine and no jail time. He was in Los Angeles for a preseason game Thursday against the Clippers and was not immediately available for comment.

Recht said he met with a city attorney and requested the citation be dismissed. He also said the friend acknowledged the marijuana was his and would come forward to accept responsibility.

Recht also said he received a letter from Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe verifying Anthony passed four random drug tests last season and another two weeks ago. The letter also said tests from U.S. Olympic Committee at the Athens Games this summer came back negative.

Pot Charge May Be Dropped Against Anthony

DENVER
- Carmelo Anthony was cited for marijuana possession while boarding the team plane last week, though the Denver Nuggets (news) star says the bag was left in his backpack by a friend.

Anthony, 20, was issued a summons last Friday at Denver International Airport while the Nuggets were waiting to board a flight to Milwaukee for a preseason game.

"I am innocent of this charge because I did not use or intentionally possess marijuana. I had no idea that there was marijuana in my backpack," Anthony read from a statement before Thursday's exhibition game in Los Angeles against the Clippers. "I sincerely regret any embarrassment this unfortunate incident has had on my family, supporters and the Denver Nuggets organization. They have always stood by me, and that means the world to me."

Anthony's attorney, Daniel Recht, said that the marijuana was left there by an out-of-town friend who borrowed the backpack last week.

"The friend obviously uses marijuana and left a small amount in the backpack when he returned it to Carmelo," Recht said. "Carmelo had no idea there was any marijuana in the backpack."

Anthony was charged with possessing less than 1 ounce of marijuana, a petty offense with a maximum $100 fine and no jail time.

Recht said Anthony's friend, James Cunningham of St. Louis, has signed an affidavit taking responsibility for leaving the marijuana in the backpack. Cunningham often stays with Anthony when he's in Denver on business.

Recht said he has met with a city attorney and believes the citation against his client could be dismissed as soon as Friday.

"I am perfectly confident that the city attorney will be fair and it is my belief that he will in fact dismiss the case against Carmelo Anthony," Recht said.

Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe doesn't want Anthony to be treated differently because he is a professional athlete.

"Our position is that the city attorney has always been extremely fair, and I think that Carmelo — we want him treated like everybody else," Vandeweghe. "We want all the facts to come to light, which I think that most or all of them have."

Recht also said he received a letter from Vandeweghe verifying Anthony passed four random drug tests last season and another just two weeks ago. The letter also said tests from U.S. Olympic Committee at the Athens Games this summer came back negative.

"He was devastated to learn there was marijuana left in the backpack," Recht said.

Frank Moya, Cunningham's attorney, said he was skeptical before speaking with Cunningham but believed his story after spending "a lot of time" with him and "putting him under the scope."

"He felt awful, and he felt he needed to try to protect against someone else paying for his mistake," Moya said.

The charismatic Anthony led Syracuse to an NCAA (news - web sites) title as a freshman in 2003, then was the third overall pick in the draft. He helped the Nuggets to one of the biggest turnarounds in NBA history, from the league's worst record at 17-65 to reaching the playoffs last year for the first time since 1995.

I knew there had to be some sort of explanation.

I just could not believe that a young NBA player would purposely have weed in his possession.....

These "friends" of these NBA players are so thoughtful of their NBA professional friends. Pot, other drugs, guns and speeding in their cars, with friends like these who needs enemies? :dizzy:

This is what I'm saying Olde Hornet.

These young cat's need to realize that what the people do that hang around them will eventually land in their laps. They need to tell these guy's, "Hey, you my boy's, I'm down with you, but if you F-UP, you gotta go." :(

F-UP, that's it, don't ask for nothing if you can't respect the situation. I would not even let a FAMILY member f-up my career.................cold but true.

Anthony's lawyer presented an affidavit from the friend stating the weed was his.

Dahill, not trying to come down on you or anything like that bruh - but that's the attitude of all of these young kids today. I am teaching a leadership class at a local high school - and none of them can understand why it's messed up to have it. My point to them is simple - it is an illegal substance - and again I am not trying to down anyone on the board who partakes of the green - I dont and I never have. But back to my kids - I tell them it's illegal - that's why you are not supposed to have it. But it goes much deeper than that. These young people today dont value not being a part of the legal system. As a black man, I dont want any parts of being caught up in the system - be it for a minor offense or whatever. The youth today dont care about that - and when you can give less than a damn about being in the system - or the threat of being caught up in the system, then we truly fight an uphill battle with these kids.

Now they talk big - but when they actually do get caught up, then they wanna cry for mama or anyone else to help them out and when they do get bailed outta situations, they dont learn from it - they go right back into the same stupid surroundings that got them caught up. This cycle is a mutha phu...And the parents are no help with the situations either....

I totally understand a lil of where you are coming from... Yes I do smoke weed and I will tell you from EXERIENCE, alcohol can do MUCH more damage to a person that weed can... And dont believe that weed always makes you move up to other things... i have been smokin since 9th grade (about 12 years) and NEVER will entertain the thought of using anything else (brothers are crackheads and I see first hand what it does)

When will these High Profile learn to leave the weed and other drugs at home. Here are some tips for them Get high at home. Hire a driver. If you are about to have drug test don't smoke a joint(takes a few weeks to get out of your system), have few drinks and sleep it off (only take a few hours to get out of your system) or take a hit of coke (takes aprox. 8 hours to get of your system) or better yet don't do anything but drink a water.

Big Co-Sign.

The history of why marijuana is illegal here in America is very extensive. But it's illegal. So whatever the law is, whether it's a stupid law or not,you got to abide by it.

drink a glass of clorox.... it may taste nasty but it works. Also vinegar. or even go to a GNC store and get some pills or the liquid shake.

Well if it is the truth as written he must have known that his boy smokes, so check everything that he borrows.

Clorox, wouldn't that kill you?

but back to what some other people were saying about kids and the green...

From jump i didn't believe it was Carmelo's. he just came back from the olympics, who got drug tests that'll detect dang near any substance, from GHB down to the ibuprofen you took for your headache..

it's been harder to steer kids away from the weed ever since Dre dropped "The Chronic" and marijuana usage has become more commonplace...
like Gee Arrah said, i guess it's how they are raised..

Dre???? Man, I thought Rick James had brought weed back.

Naw...See Rick, smoked weed, but he was more well known for the cocaine binge known as the late 70s and early 80s (remember his line from Chappelle "Cocaine is a helluva drug :lmao: )..

Rick said on Tom Joyner before he died that this reference in superfreak
"Three's not a crowd to her, she says
Room 714, I'll be waiting
When I get there she's got incense, wine and candles
It's such a freaky scene"

referenced not only menage et trois ...but also qualude (spell check) and other drug concoctions..

When I was in elementary school at the time, that's when the "Just Say No" campaign was kicking off and D.A.R.E and all those other anti-drug stuff. People talking about dope was a whisper until Dre dropped "The Chronic"...next thing you know, n-words from Maringouin, La. to Minnesota were wearing khakis, Nike Cortez and smokin' weed...and talking about it..

I couldn't co-sign more.

All these guys need to set their "boys" straight when they first hit it big.

Yeah I agree... before Dre dropped the chronic... even rappers were downing the use of weed... Hell Dr. Dre even mentioned how he wouldnt touch it in a song that released on a previous album.
