Need Professional Advice about Perms for Young Children

What advice can you give me.

I am considering putting a perm in my daughter's hair. She is 4 years old. Her hair is very thick, she is tender headed, and it is a battle to comb her hair.

A stylist suggested that I can put a lye mild perm. But I would like to know the difference between a perm w/lye, and wo/lye. I want to do what is best.

Thanks

I'll tell you what my Hair Guru in PB told me

I didn't want to put a perm on my daughter's hair, but some antibiotics she was taking for a scalp infection to' her hair UP! I had to do something, or she wasn't going to have any hair! The specialist I spoke with (who owns a beauty supply shop and has seen me through every chemical process I have ever done to my hair) recommended PCJ in the jar. Not the kit that comes in the box. She also said that neutralizing shampoo is pretty much all the same. I don't know the difference between lye and no lye perms, I don't think, Maybe I do and don't remember. duh. Anyway, she also told me to deep condition after every touch up, and to follow her directions IMPLICITLY (if you want those, PM me). I did that, and my baby's hair turned out great! I only take her in for trims, or when I am feeling excessively lazy and don't want to do her hair myself.

I have asked around here and no one knows if PCJ is still available. Where did you purchase it?
Give me any information you have, I am very desperate. It is a challenge combing her hair, and in the end we are both in tears

Thanks

The difference between lye and no lye...

...is SODIUM HYDROXIDE.

If your daughter's hair is very thick, then you'll probably need to use something with lye in it. Lye is very good for breaking down coarse hair.

I don't like no-lye perms and was also told by several stylist, including my own, that no-lye perms are not good for our hair. Black people already have dry hair and no-lye perms only dry out the hair even more. I would suggest you speak to a professional stylist before doing anything.

Hope all works out for your daughter.

PEACE

I did speak to a professional stylist about the perm and she did suggest a mild perm with lye. She also told me that the wo/lye will dry your hair out, which I did not know.
I remember PCJ but no one that I spoke with has it. I guess they need to order it. I would like to try the PCJ before a regular perm

I just called my stylist for you and she said:

PCJ (Pressing Comb in a Jar) is a regular perm. PCJ in the box is no-lye and PCJ in the jar has lye. She recommended using a mild perm with lye for the same reason everyone else previously said about dryness. She said she uses Motions for Kids and has had the most success with it. The first perm on virgin hair will not be very straight, but the next couple of touch ups will get it nice and straight.

Hope that helps

Is MOTIONS FOR KIDS the name of a perm or something else?

Thanks to all for responding. I will try it this week. I really don't want her hair super straight, I just want to get the comb through.

I thought I saw PCJ at Sally's Beauty Supply a few months back.
Call one of the locations near you to check.
If they don't have it I suggest trying one of those Korean beauty supply places.

MOTIONS FOR KIDS is the name of the perm, it comes in a yellow container with purple writing.

Did you try Sally's. What about some of the vietnamese shops around town? Try Walgreens.

That's right! My stylist uses Motions products for girls and women. She also uses Dudley.

Also, she said that PCJ (in the jar, not the box) was the better one to use, with lye remember. She said if you don't want her hair straight-straight then PCJ will just texturize it some. But she said that in her practice, she has found that Motions is the best perm for girls.

She said for the first perm completely cover the enitre head/hair with the perm. For touch ups, only apply perm to the new growth.
She also said you should take her to licensed stylist for best results, but that might just be an endorsement of the profession! :D

I have a boy 'cause I can't even much COMB, let lone perm somebody's head!
