Kid's websites

The government just approved .kids web address where all content will be the equivalent of PG-13. Do you think it will help. I personally like the idea but not because of protecting kids. I think the internet is terribly unorginized and we need more stuff like .kids, .music, .xxx to help people navigate better.

nice idea BUT...

Who will manage the .kids stuff? I fear this would be a perfect opportunity for pedaphiles to try & draw kids in. Unless there is some group that makes it their business to thoroughly check all applications for websites with the .kids URL and keep watch of the sites once their up, I don't think this new extension will make anything safer for them. And with the manpower it would take to keep checks up once the sites get plentiful, I wonder if it's really possible.

Still, if this has been researched and developed as a feasible option, I hope that it works.

Well the purpose is to make so only sites related to children can be created. They say children mistakenly suft into porn and other adult sites when looking for something as simple as the whitehouse. As far as who will supervise these child sites as far as chat rooms and things, that is something else they will have to consider, but I guess parents will just have to police thier children as they always do. Hopefully they won't get a false sense of security and just let the kids be even less supervised because they figure .kids is super-safe.

You could start with the same age verification companies out there and have them monitor the websites for malicious content. I have long since wanted to see the top level domains broken into more content based catagories.

I don't think we have to worry about malicious content. I am sure they will make sure there aren't any sites kids shouldn't be at. The only way we'd have to worry about something is if they had delayed sites. I remember when I was doing tech support, we used to send people to purple.com to test whether thier internet connection was working. It was supposed to be simply a purple screen. A few months down the line we came to find out that if you leave it on your screen a lesbian site eventually comes up, so I think hidden sites would be the only worry. I doubt it though. Age verfication is not the problem because these are all gonna be kids sites. I think the one problem we might see is chat rooms. We might not need to have chat rooms and message boards on kids sites initially. YEs, I like the idea of the domains been broken in categories as well.
