New NASA research center opened at JSU

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- With the opening of a new NASA research center, Jackson State University will no longer be one of the "best kept secrets in higher education," says the university's president Ronald Mason Jr.

Mason led a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday for the Geo-Spatial Visualization and Research Center in the university's old industrial arts building.

The center is the result of a collaboration with scientists from NASA and the Office of Naval Research.

The research center will generate a broad range of information useful to real estate developers, urban and regional planners, farmers and law enforcement officials. It can provide data on land use and land mapping.

The center can also supply information to forecasters and disaster management officials tracking severe weather.

Since 1996, JSU has received about $7.1 million. primarily from state and federal sources, for projects now housed at the new center, said Felix Okojie, JSU vice president of research development.

The center seeks to increase minority researchers in remote sensing and geographical information systems.

It also aims to increase collaborative research among Mississippi universities and commercial industry and government agencies.
